My fiancee and I were planning on getting married in New Jersey. But the requirements to apply for a marriage license is a SSN of an American citizen.

What do we do first when she comes to America on the K1:

Get a SSN then get married or will her birth certificate and or passport be an okay thing to use to get married first than apply for a SSN.

What did you guys do? Any advice!? Does the process to obtain a SSN take long? We wanted to get married ASAP!

Thanks

-Kristin

Here in Illinois, I as the USC used my DL and SSN and she used her birth certificate with translation along with her passport.

We applied for her SSN three weeks after arrival, one week before the marriage (at the county courthouse) and received it one week later.

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

You will not need an SSN to marry. It is a requirement to have an SSN IF you have one. You can let the clerk know that you are not a resident and do not have an SSN. In that case, they tend to use your foreign passport instead.

All that being said, yes, you can to the SSA after you arrive and apply for an SSN. Print out your I-94 info to take with you. https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html

What is a USC and DL?
