Clearly a misunderstanding here. Haha! But I guess it's resolved but then I'd give a summary of the discussion ;)

The reason why people here are saying "6 months" maximum of stay is because IN A YEAR you should stay LESS INSIDE the US and more outside the US. We only have 12 months in a year so in order to say that a person stayed more outside of the US the person needs to be out of US land for half of 12 months which is 6 months or greater. Regardless if the person exits within the year because it is an accumulated time inside the US. That's why 6 months tops is the longest your mom can stay. That's only for a year anyway :)

If she had a tourist visa before then you should ask your mom or clarify the validity. It may still be valid :) If not then just have her apply again. Hopefully she won't have much trouble with it. Good luck! ^_^

You can look up current processing times, usually a few week to a month or so to get the interview.

The normal B2 is issued for 10 years. YMMV.

It all depends on the CBP officer at POE. It can vary anywhere from few months to 10 years. The CBP officer at POE determines the validity of B2 visa.

six months is not a 'visit'...is she also coming to provide child care so you can go back to work?

OP said she would be travelling, presumably without the children.

But thinking on it would not do any harm to document your child care arrangements, will you have a live in nanny?

I think you are confused.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Yes, within regulations.

No guarantee that she'll be able to get 6 months at the POE. I know of some people who were only given 3 weeks to legally "tour" the US.
