Hello people.

Just to start off I have tried to research this on the internet and I have even sent email off to the US embassy in London where I should be going shortly (fingers crossed). The emIl I have had back felt like an automated email that didn't help me whatsoever.

My current situation is that me and my fiancé have recently sent off the I-129f form. The problem is (and I'm sure people have come across this before) but I can't seem to find anything is we need to book the wedding venue but have no idea if the visa will be approved in time? It needs to be this summer for work reasons.

Some questions that I have are:

What would happen if we got married and the visa was still being processed?

If anyone has been in this situation before, what did you do?

If you need any more information from me then please let me know and I will do my best to get back to you.

I really appreciate any responses that I may get about this.

Thank you very much

Chris & Bianca

As everyone here will attest to ... DO NOT BOOK WEDDING BEFORE VISA IS IN HAND! Period... Many many many have been totally screwed by doing this! The process is currently taking about 6-8 months till visa in hand for the K1 but that is not guaranteed and nobody can tell you wen or exactly how long...

If you marry before it is issued... You are no longer eligible for k1 and have to start over with spouse visa...

You shouldn't finalize any wedding plans until after the visa is issued. There's no telling how long the process will take in any individual case, only some rough estimates. The K1 is only a fiance visa. If you get married before the visa is issued, it will be invalidated and useless to you.

If you have a hard deadline to get married by and don't think the K1 will come through in time, you may look into getting married first and then applying for a CR-1 visa, which is for married couples.

By marrying before the K-1's issuance, you would void it and have to start from scratch with a CR-1. Expect that to take over a year.

You can make tentative plans as far as your wedding venue goes if you want to... but don't make anything concrete. Do NOT make final wedding plans or set a specific wedding date until your visa is in hand!

It will be when you have gone through the approval process and interview and obtained the visa. That length of time can vary. It will be what it will be; regardless of your desires or plans.

Some questions that I have are:

What would happen if we got married and the visa was still being processed?

Then you will be denied the visa and need to restart all over with a CR-1. Bad idea.

If anyone has been in this situation before, what did you do?

Waited until the visa was in hand, then book the flight, then come to the US and then get married (at the county courthouse is quickest). Many then have the religious or big ceremony later.

IF your interview will be soon, then all looks very good for a US wedding. Time the entry to the US such that the marriage takes place within the 90 window requirement (that is VERY important).

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!
