Are copies of personal letters and e-mails really necessary before the consular stage? There is nothing in our letters that could be damaging to our case (unless CIS frowns on swear words...) but I still don't feel comfortable allowing anyone, let alone the U.S. government, read my most personal of possessions. I realize you can black out information, but I don't know where to draw the line, and I'd be highly tempted to black out almost the entire letter. So in light of that, as long as I send in photos, phone records, flight tickets, etc. do I really need to include letters?

We went for K1 and did not include any personal letters or emails in our original application. We just included a letter of how we met and how we got engaged, some pics and the airline tickets plus all the required paperwork. He took the emails to the interview with him and they did read some of them. Hope this helps.

I included proof of ongoing relationship in the I-129F package so when I got to the interview I wasn't asked to see anything, just one picture from my album.

We sent emails that had absolutely no personal info in them, talking about upcoming visits or something similar. The gov't know far more about you than what they can read in an email, why are you so worried?

Like I say, it's not that I'm particularly worried, I just think that it's none of their damn business. I feel like those letters are extremely private, even if there's no sensitive information in them, and I feel very uncomfortable sharing them with anyone. So if I don't HAVE to provide those letters, I won't.

Thanks, I think I'll do the same.

I wish you luck. You do know that this IS the US gov't you are dealing with here. They ask for personal details in the GC interview, sometimes about sex. If you can't handle sending some blacked out non personal emails - you will have a hard time with this whole process.

The bottom line is we all want to be with our partner, for life. If the govt wants to know how often we shag & how, I will tell them. Not by choice but because I want my hubby here for good.

We printed out a list of the e-mails that we sent one another. I also printed out a few messages that didn't have any personal information included.

I don't think they are interested in reading your personal thoughts/feelings as much as they are looking for proof that communication takes place frequently.

We did not include a single e-mail or letter in our original petition. Just evidence of having met, four photographs, and three months of phone bills. No problems getting the I-129F approved.

We probably won't have any e-mails at the consular stage, either, as we haven't e-mailed anything more than 'hey babe going out tonight call the cell instead of the land line' in about two years. Phone records & a memory book for us.

We sent 5 e-mails with translations and they mostly consisted of I love you, I miss you, can't wait to see you again...

I didn't send any that were too personal.

It is not necessary to send them - especially if you have other proof.

We had numerous email letters to choose from. I selected some very nonpersonal ones from over the period to show a continuous relationship. I understand about not wanting to disclose very personal or intimate expressions of love to these voyeurs. You only need to be prepared to show continuous contact. Telephone records work well too.

Good luck.

Well while I'm at it, why don't I just send them some pornographic pictures of me and my lady having sex, that would be a no-doubter. It's sad that we just accept the fact that the government can invade our privacy whenever the hell they choose. If they want to see letters, let them ask me for them.

Good to know! We're pretty much the same way with the e-mails in the past year or so as well, especially since we've lived together 8 months out of the past 12.

PUHLEASE. Did I imply that? No.

I said if you can't send a few stupid pointless emails that PROVE YOU'RE IN A RELATIONSHIP, to the gov't (who you need to pacify in order to get your damn visa), then you have bigger problems.
