I-129F, etc, Form Questions

I'm trying to fill out the K-1 stuff right now, but I'm confused on a few points:

1) when writing names in Vietnamese, should I include diacritic marks and all the hats, moustaches, etc, over the letters, or keep it strictly English formatted?

2) if I need to keep strictly non-VNese character formatting, do I need to rewrite everything in VNese formatting on the places where it says "write in original language"?

3) where do I get certified translations in HCM?

4) Do I need to get documents translated if they're in VNese and English (mixed language housing/work contracts)? Or, well, do I need to get them certified that the translation in-document is accurate?

5) are there any example filled out forms in VNese for me to see?

Thanks!

I can't answer the other questions as I am not familiar with them but:

1. Strictly English

2. Those fields are for native alphabet that uses non-Roman letters (e.g.: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.). Vietnamese alphabet uses Roman letters so the answer is No.

4. You can translate the document to English yourself as long as you provide something certifying that you are fluent in both languages and attesting to the accuracy of the translation (perhaps have it notarized).

Good luck!

Thanks. I guess I'll get it notarized where I got my work permit stuff done, off of Le Duan. Fun waste of 2-3 hours, that is :)

Neither of us is truly fluent in both languages, my partner certainly isn't fluent in English legalese, and I have no clue what the person above this post said. I guess I'll get it translated where I got my work permit done also. Another 2-3 hours for that too. Fun, fun.

6) for proof of having met (seems to be the big issue people face), would having two (translated) police registers showing we lived in the same place at the same time (current) be sufficient primary evidence? I have more to include, but I'm hoping it'll be "extra" with that in hand.

-> disclaimer: i do not know your situation & certainly not an expert, there are others on here who are in various step or successfully completed what you & I just got started. I submitted my K1 about 3 weeks ago & received the confirmation/acceptance notice = under initial review.

are you living in vietnam right now with your fiancee? = "same place at the same time = assumed same house?

--> assumption!! maybe a big "no no" in Vietnam since they frown upon this unless you 2 were married -

perhaps things have changed.

perhaps others can comment on this since the only thing I know is the obligatory - at the hotels "no foreign nationals may have a vietnamese guest in same room of opposite gender unless you have a certificate of marriage" + I know from our "not so liberal culture" being born in Vietnam and immigrated to the US.

As far as proof of having met, you can read on here about the various documents = basically everything you have in your possession that could be used as evidence - all organized - lots of info on this website; all of the dates of your visits with plane tickets, boarding stubs, hotel bills, restaurant receipts, copy of passport with visa stamps, pictures, engagement ceremony (if any), ring etc....keep everything.

translation: if you live in a city with Vietnamese community, you can find help there; either professionally ($) or just around or a friend with good grasp and understanding Vietnamese/English that can help you to translate and then he/she just have to verify/atest & sign the documents. I did the translation myself :-)

she also needs to write & sign a letter of the relationship etc... and then gets translated as well.

+ a copy of her birth certificate + translation

Couples (boyfriend/girlfriend) live together just like everybody else in the US or Europe. They are more liberal now than used to be 5-10 yrs ago.

Don't worry about the hotel fine print. They don't ask for anything else other than your US passport and the Vietnamese ID for your fiancee.

hummmmm.... Last Summer, I checked into a 5* hotel in Saigon with my then girlfriend (now fiancee)(with Vietnam ID card). She was not allowed to share the same room with me (Vietnamese- Naturalized US citizen with my passport). They asked for marriage certificate. "not married". They requested me to pay for another room. I tried to explained and even asked to have a room with 2 beds. My girlfriend became very upset and didn't want me to pay so much more money for another room and says it would be fine that she would stay with her friend. I stayed 1 night and then checked out the next day and found a hotel near her friend's apartment - which is all fine. So, maybe it's my bad luck or hotel specifics (5* hotel) or the hotel wanting to make more money or something else....IDK. Since then I stay at hotels and she stays with family/friends.

Hi siennaslammer,

I'm sorry to hear that you got such an annoying thing happened to you and your fiancee. If I were in that situation, I would have felt very upset and not being respected by those people/whoever set that obligatory at the hotel.

I'm Vietnamese. My fiance who is living in the US filed the petition for us last December. Please forgive me if my english is not so good.

As far as I know, there's no problem for couples (boyfriends/girlfriends) who live together in same apartments or stay in hotels if they are free from their both-side families.

I think there are 2 things those bullsh*t people at this bullsh*t 5-star hotel look at: 1. you're a foreign national, 2. your vietnamese fiancee (which is your girlfriend at that time). They requested you for marriage certificate because they're afraid foreign men who rent rooms to spend nights with girls who are paid to sleep with them. They shouldn't let innocent people like you involved in such bad experiences. They should feel ashamed for it. I hope you and your fiancee will not have to be in that situation again. Good luck to your journey together.

Thanks for the note. (apology to original poster - for hijacking this thread a bit)

No worries. Your English is perfect! I am trying to get my fiancee to learn English and be able to get 50% of your English level; which will be just fine.

Regarding the hotel bit. I understand and completely support of the 'laws/rules' behind the whole problem. A twist to this is that I often observed both foreigners and Vietnamese men that would take women into 3*-4*-5* hotels where I was staying for that very purpose. I think that they had to "grease $ " the wheels to keep the silence. No worries. I just ignore the whole issue when I am over there & focus on what is important.

Enjoy.
