Starting a joint bank account

Has anyone had success starting a joint bank account with out the other person being present?

I tried but was told that the other person has to be here and have a SSN . You can call to find out but nothing beats a failure but a try

No, but I was able to add my husband to my credit card account. His name shows up on the bill with my address and he has his own card. You can ask if they might do the same for your fiance, worth a try.

From what I have heard you can not do that. The other person must be present and must have a SSN. I think this is a US law but not 100% sure. Have looked into before.

Instead of a SSN, the other person can also have a TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) in keeping with the abbreviations.

I had to be present to open joint bank account but didn't need ssn. I was added to my husbands (then fiancé) credit card without ssn and it was done over the phone so my presence wasn't required,

I was able to. Forget about US banks. Try a foreign bank that has a branch in the US.

Suntrust! We went to one branch and the banker told me i need a passport and proof of my foreign address, no ssn. But because i didn't have it with me then we went to another branch later and the banker said i cannot open it withous ssn, i told her that another banker said I can, she made a call somewhere to confirm she can and opened bank account ok :-)

Not all banks require a SSN for both parties. More so, the bigger banks with branches internationally may allow joint bank accounts if one of the parties has a SSN.

I was able to. Forget about US banks. Try a foreign bank that has a branch in the US.

i have been looking into a prepaid visa debit card... Have not done it yet but at a glance it appears to be a good option. I don't have to maintain a checking account and i can reload it whenever i want.

as far as my local bank, my wife had to show SSI card. had to be present to sign paperwork.
