So let me start off by saying this is a theoretical discussion for my 22 yr old daughter. We have been going back and forth about this scenario and she refuses to listen to our reasoning so I will put it to the masses (aka VJ people!) to see how you did it

  • She is a new driver about to obtain her drivers license
  • she has no driving history yet
  • She then plans to buy a car outright on her own under her name using money she has saved **yay**
  • She has no established credit, she knows what she must do but has not done it yet
  • She needs to get insurance in her own name since the car will be in her name

Has anyone on VJ had the experience of calling the car insurance companies cold, with no previous driving history as a new driver with no credit hostory and been able to obtain car insurance? We know the rates will obviously be sky high but that is expected.

Our situation is such that we do not wish to put her under our insurance because it is not something we can do for my stepsons as well so its more fair that everyone has to obtain their own insurance.

GO! (and thanks)

Excellent idea! Nothing like finding out the results yourself - best learning lesson for her.

She is currently shocked at the price for the car she planned on buying.

i suggest getting insurance with a carrier that doesn't rely on credit history,

such as Fred Loya ....

i suggest you talk her into getting a volvo 740 or 940 turbo station wagon. this is a great first car for a recent immigrant - holds much, can carry friends, can trick out the stereo and actually hold a 42 inch lcd tv in the back.

plus it's a tank - she'll walk away from a t-bone, if'n she wears the seatbelt. circa 1200 to 1900 for one fully working/vetted by a mechanic.

I will give you my daughter's number and tell me how that discussion goes :) She is highly impractical to the N-th degree but she'll figure it out.

tell her she can haul either 12 kegs of beer or 1/2 tonne of weed in it - that'll keep her attention, maybe, for up to 3 minutes and 22 seconds ;)

IMO, the sticker shock will be 'full coverage insurance' for a 22 year old single female. Call her? no la - though I appreciate the sentiment and I pray she not run away from the house this weekend.

Just out of pure curiosity - what was it ?

I 'think' she had picked a 2006 2 door Honda accord, although not sure.

My second oldest just bought his first car. He is paying 88 a month, but that is with our names also on his insurance. The car is in his name but he has us added to give him a bit of a discount. Hes had his license since 16 but as he is still under 21 his rate is high. It will go down about about a bit when he turns 21. His rate on his own was 120ish so saved about a good chunk with us being added. He picked up a Honda Accord 2001 four doors also help lower rates.

I've tried my darnedest to get her to understand that a nice, 4 door 'family-ish' car will have lower rates. I wish we could add her or for that matter my 2 stepsons but circumstances have been such that none of them is reliable (massive back stories here) and also the thought that an accident while on our insurance affects our rates too.

Oh I definitely understand the risk with the rates. My second oldest is one I wouldn't worry about too much, but my oldest I would he has his head in the clouds so much it's crazy. We didn't have to worry too much about the 2nd boy as he thinks very logically and doesn't want to part with any more money then he has too, he wanted a dependable car to get him to the University in the fall, he was getting dropped off in the mornings at the College and walks home when he's done but the University is too far for that. He's determined unlike his older brother.

Maybe you could convince her how much of a pain it would be for her friends who have to climb in the back seat.

Look for a local insurance agent. Sometimes it is best to negotiate with them. get a lot of quotes from different provider and compare them. Ask to beat each others premium prices. Become a member of aaa, they give discounts.

In addition, loaning a car is one of the best way to build a credit history. You can be a guarantor to lower the rates.

I work as an insurance agent and young people like your daughter call us all the time for quotes so encourage her to call, she can say I am thinking of buying such and such and they will give a quote. You are correct that her lack of credit and driving experience will affect her rate. She should consider getting an older car that she could have liability only on as this will be the cheapest. You cannot negotiate your insurance rate as they approved by the insurance commissioner for each state. Try Geico (which is not the company that I work for) as they seem to have good rates for young drivers at least in GA where I live.
