I believe we should look at a series of factors such as access to education, income level, job opportunities, etc but it will take a couple of generations, if not longer, until the playing field gets near level.

True. However, we also need to recognize that the Civil Rights movement is barely 50 years old, which is to say the prevailing white culture in America had roughly a 150 year head start on blacks. Many are only to quick to dismiss the issue and claim that blacks were afforded equal rights at the end of the civil war, but until the mid-60's many blacks still were under invisible shackles of denied opportunities in education, and in the work place. If many blacks don't have more money today is because most of them do not come from families where money and property - thence political influence - was handed down from one generation to another.

That is what I said earlier. It will take a couple of generations, or longer, until the disadvantages imposed on blacks are mitigated.

Lost, do you really believe this? Do you think the people you consider liberals on VJ actually want blacks to be in the projects and prisons? I understand there are different mentalities as to how to achieve success for the black community. But I don't think that's what you're suggesting.

I don't know about other cities, I can only speak about Detroit where I grew up. The reason our family and a lot of other families moved was because of forced integration in the school system. They called it bussing. In the middle of second grade I was yanked out of my school and forced to get on a bus everyday to go 4 or 5 miles back and forth to a different school in the name of "racial harmony" Where as before I just walked to school. My parents said screw that, and we moved out to the suburbs along with many other families. Now this was only one reason of many. The mayor at the time, the great Coleman A. Young, would also scream racism whenever he was about to get caught in one of his many many corruption scandals. Guess what? It worked like a charm. He never had to answer for any of it. So Detroit turned into one of the highest percentage black cities in the country, if not the highest. The Mayor would constantly blame the white man for all the ills of the city. And he was elected over and over again based on this. He didn't even try to tone it down or hide it. He made these types of proclamations in public, in interviews etc. etc. Now if you're a white family, would you hang around? This sort of thing continued for years with after he died with other mayors. FInally they elected a decent guy (Dave Bing) who seemed to get it, but it was too late, the place was already too far gone. In the most recent election they actually elected a white guy which blew my mind. I think the citizens of Detroit are finally figuring it's best to elect the most qualified candidate, not the one that looks the most like you.

I'd argue the city wasn't being taken care of because the black mayor was too busy using the funds to enrich himself in the name of racism and while doing so hurt black folks more than any white man could ever have.

So how do we measure when things are equal? What's the tipping point?

Well, to be fair, look at how many white men ran before now. Since Detroit has become mostly black, it's been nothing but black guys running against black guys. I don't care about the color, if you can get the job done, that's what matters.

Ellis Island wasn't the only port of entry 100 years ago. My grandparents entered the country separately 100 years ago and back then there was no inspection at the points where they crossed.

I do miss Galveston and New Orleans as major POEs for the immigration stuff.

They broke up the family structure. Just as much as the slave trade did. That sent those that were out of poverty back in it. With the family structure gone kids drop out of school... Hang with the wrong crowd ... Go to prison , join gangs. Corruption in government IE Detroit ect. A city school near me ranks in the top 10 on Dollars spent per pupil in the nation. 80% of the black african males do NOT get past the 10 th grade. in this school district. So it is not money that is the problem. Until the black community says we have had enough and DOES something about it nothing will change. It is not common for students to miss 70-80 days of school in this district......Not because they are in jail... Just don't show up. You hold a parent teacher conference one or two parents show up. A vast majority of students are disrespectful towards the teachers. This is not caused by the white man have the boot on the Negro's neck,
