AOS after marriage

I'm unclear how this progresses.

I know I can get temporary permission to work, but was under the impression this costs $500 plus will take a good few months and we'd need to be married within 90 anyway.

Can this be extended so once you have permission to work you can work through the entire process?

Or is it just up the marriage, and then you can't work whilst you do the whole AOS process?

File for work permit (EAD) and travel permit (AP) with the AOS and those two are free.

It's buy 1, get 2 free.

Work and travel card will come in 60-90 days. Start work

Greencard (AOS) will take longer to process.

Hard to predict. We married Day 5 in the country. Mailed AOS/EAD/AP around Day 9. Work authorization took 58 days. The sooner you marry and get your marriage certificate, the sooner you can apply and start the 60-90 day clock.

You can apply for a SSN even before you marry, so get that out of the way and you'll already have your card by the time you get work authorization....if there are no hiccups. Then it will go easier with starting work.
