Washington (CNN) – Marijuana, which is still placed in the same category as heroin, ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms by the federal government, is no more dangerous than alcohol, President Barack Obama said in an interview published Sunday.

Speaking to New Yorker editor David Remnick, Obama said he still viewed pot smoking negatively – but that on the whole, the drug wasn’t the social ill that it’s been viewed as in the past.

I hate drugs, but weed is not the same as heroin, IMO.

In the US, alcohol has destroyed more lives and caused more traffic deaths than weed has. Weed and heroin are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

'In the Honolulu of Barry's teenage years marijuana was flourishing up in the hills, out in the countryside, in covert greenhouses everywhere. It was sold and smoked right there in front of your nose; Maui Wowie, Kauai Electric, Puna Bud, Kona Gold, and other local variations of pakololo were readily available.'

I say good on Obama. I don't often agree with what he says, but I also don't look for any reason to bash him even for things I agree with like some people would. In this case, I have no problem with his statement, just wish he would do more with it as well.

If Obama believes in this he should push for decriminalisation. Likely, that will not happen.
