Hi all,

My mom visited the states on a B2 visa last year from July-August. She entered and exited from the Canadian border. She had a valid tourist visa for Canada and the US.

She got an email last week from an agent who identified himself as belonging to the Department of Homeland Security. He requested a meeting to "ask a few questions" and to "update information". My mother informed him that she would love to do so but was now back home in Pakistan. He then requested a copy of the passport showing entry back in Pakistan and some other information to "close your file". My mother advised him that she would be more than glad to drop by the local US consulate (in Pakistan) to sort this matter out.

My questions for the helpful readers on this website is

1. Is such an email common?

2. What is this process? I have never heard of Homeland Security sending out emails like this.

Any clarifications are helpful.

The first thing that comes to my mind is it's some kind of scam.

I suggest that the file was opened because

your Mom fit the travelling profile of terrorists.

What's that? my guess is Pakistan->Canada->USA->Canada->Pakistan

Why would Homeland Security want proof or even care of her entry into Pakistan? All they should care about is that she left the US.

This is not common procedure so she should be on alert. As a rule of thumb, she should not send pictures of her documents over the internet. For all you know someone may try and steal her identity.

Have her contact the US Consulate in Pakistan, forward them the entire e-mail and confirm that they need such information. If they do, she should set up an appointment and show up in person.

Good luck!
