Hi,

Two weeks ago I received the yellow letter to bring my driver license to the interview, but I didn't receive the interview appointment letter yet.

I applied for citizenship about 3 months ago, and my fingerprints were taken almost 2 months ago. My GC expires at the end of this month (January 2014).

Do you think I need to request an infopass for an extension? The reason I'm asking this is because I don't want any delay in my case or paying for a GC renewal that I'll never use. I understand that I should have applied earlier, but now my case is in process.

What to do? Do you think I go for the infopass asap, or just show up to the interview with an expired GC? Btw, my office is in Dallas, Texas

Thank you in advance for any advice.

You do not need to extend your greencard. You can become a citizen with expired greencard. It will take another couple of months before you get the citizenship. The one reason you might have to extend the GC is if you want to leave the country for anything and you will need the GC to get back in.

If you do not have any plans of travel then I would advice you to save the money to extend GC. And do not setup any infopass they will not speed up your n400 process because your gc is expiring.

But as the above person said if you have the 2 year gc then you need to apply to remove conditions.

My concern is that in the interview the officer will notice that my GC expired and he/she will want me to renew my GC. This means that I need to pay the fee for a GC that I will never use, putting on stand-by my citizenship case.

I don't know if it is a good option asking for a favor to extend my card for 3 or 6 months?

Just to let you know your green card express but your status doesn't. You are still a permanent resident even if your card expires. I think that the officer won't make it a big deal really, since they have to take your card away anyways.

Please read this interview experience post. You'll see that the applicant's greencard had expired years before the interview and that this didn't cause any problems.

Sorry... I meant oath experience... but the applicant's greencard expired long before the interview too.

The greencard does not need to be current during the interview or the oath. As long it is not revoked you are fine. And also there is nothing like to extend it just by 3 to 6 months.

The only issue with an expired greencard is that you cannot leave the country. Once you leave you are out of status and will not be able to come back into the country and you lose your greencard.
