Obtained SSN post-marriage in married name... how to fill out AOS packet

I searched and came up with a bunch of info on how I should have filed for my SSN in my maiden name (impossible because we were married within 4 business days of POE). But nothing (or nothing of value) on how to proceed if the SSN is issued immediately in your married last name.

My question is: Now that I have my SSN in my married last name, how do I proceed to fill out my AOS forms? Use my maiden name or married name?

If I use my married name, do I have to provide any additional forms/documentation to show the name change?

FWIW - when I went to the office I asked the clerk to assign the SSN in my maiden name and I would change it later and she straight up told me that wasn't an option. I didn't argue.

Thanks =)

This is all perfectly normal. You fill out your AOS with your new married name. Put your maiden name where asked for 'other names used'

The only documentation for the name change you need is your marriage certificate and that's a requirement anyways. So go ahead and dive into the paperwork.

Hey - thanks for responding! And that's awesome... sometimes getting wrapped up in all the info on VJ just complicates things!

Cheers

Being able to get the SSN in your married name is a good thing. This does not affect how you file the AOS paperwork though. Anyone changing their name when they marry, whether their SSN has their maiden or new married name on it(or no SSN yet at all), would file all the AOS forms in their married name.

3. Form I-485: Petition for Alien Relative (note: use the non US Citizen spouse's married name on this form and list previous name/names)
