Are you sure.

I'm pretty sure. I suppose anything is possible. But even the fall of the Soviet Union want that bad. As long as the un exists with the current security council, any country on said council will remain relevant. And yes, I'm aware of the china "transfer" of un seat.

That's what the Roman's said.

Yeah but the Romans lasted around 1000 years in one form or another. How many generations thought doom was right around the corner? Even though it wasn't.

China has been around 5000 years, and they still haven't conquered the known world yet. The candle that burns the brightest, burns the fastest.

And it is not doom, it is just getting knocked off the sand hill.

Constantine was smart. He moved to the eastern capital, and let the most difficult part of his empire to defend to fall to the barbarians. The US could learn that lesson, and stop being the world's cop.

Every time someone compares the fall of Rome to the possible future of the US, this comes to mind:

That's not to dismiss the point of view completely as history does tend to be a bit cyclical. But I also think people expect collapse or something major to happen in many cases. I'm sure back in the 20's and for sure 50's people said the end was a real possibility. But it wasn't. I guess the US as we know it won't last forever and our spot at the top of said sand hill isn't permanent. But, we're actually still doing pretty well. We're still one of the biggest innovators and as long as we're a better place to live than China for their rich folks, I imagine more and more of them will come over to the dark side. You should know this living in California. I certainly see it in Toronto. I think the demographics are going to change a lot over the next century but I think that can be a strength. Remember that article AJ posted about the US still being a strong innovator due to immigrants? I think that's our ace in the hole. The US is an awesome place to go to college and start a business.

But the temp jobs are a scary sign of things to come. I wish there would be some new laws to address these loop holes a little better than now.

It's not Obama's fault. He doesn't know anything about it. The low workforce participation is caused by retirements of baby boomers. Obama has a pen, he will change it. He also has an Obamaphone. He doesn't need congress.

Don't worry. Go shopping

The US is changing. I guess it comes down to what you are used to, and where you come from. California is home to me, always feels that way, and specifically the little chunk of woodland I own. Despite being born and raised there, I no longer feel the same way about the San Fernando Valley and SoCal. The place is familiar, but now it is an overpopulated wasteland full of trogladytes, as far as I am concerned.

But, the mood for the US is to become meek and less aggressive while at the same time allowing any loon to pack heat anywhere and everywhere. This is not the sign of an emerging empire. I think we are about to eat our own.
