Hi!

Got my visa issued today!what a great news!

I'm planning to cross the us border soon, whit personal belongings

In a truck, like small furniture, clothing, etc...

Do I have any papers to file out?

Is there any rules I should be aware of?

Thanks!

Be prepared and organized, they like that !

Make a detailed list of your belongings including what is in your boxes and suitcases.

Make sure you have all you papers near you

Breathe, relax and look at them in the eyes while answering their questions.

Make sure they take your sealed enveloppe

Make sure they stapple your I-94 in your passport with a date (you are going to need it when filling your AOS)

Good luck !

PS: If I may, which state are you going ?

I almost forgot !!

If you have electronics or furniture that looked new bring the receipt

Bring a list of goods (general list) and give them a total value.

If you are bringing your vehicle (and importing it to the USA to stay) then you need a Letter of Compliance from the Manufacturer (head office). If it's a Chrysler then contact them in USA. Vehicle must be over 1 year old in order to avoid duty etc. The vehicle must be OWNED 100% by you in order to bring it across. Customs will have you fill out paperwork when you cross. You will need their signed form in order to register your car at the DMV (wherever you live). You also need to show the Letter of Compliance to the DMV.

If your vehicle is new you may get by without the Letter of Comp. if there is an EPA label on the engine and a DOT stamp on the door (meaning they meet the EPA standards).

If your truck is really old then check out the list on the Customs website for vehicle exemptions (meaning no Letter required).

Is there still a small fee to pay when they issue your I-94 anymore - it was about $6 way back when - good to have some American $$$ on you handy.

Most times they don't care what's in your truck - they may ask if you have houseplants, perishables like fruit (neither of which you should bring) and that's about it.

I POEd at the Ambassador Bridge (Windsor-Detroit). We pulled up, the Officer asked our citizenship, then "Where are you going".

We said, "Activating K1 Visa then headed to XXX"

The officer had us go to secondary inspection (which is required), they processed the paperwork, went through out belongings (which at the time were two suitcases, I transported my furniture, animals, etc afterwards) issued me a paper 1-94 and stapled it to my passport and we were on our way. Total time was about 45 mins... which I've heard is a little longer than usual!

There is no fee for the I-94 and it is not issued at POE anymore, they are done electronically and can be retrieved online at the CBP website.

They do still issue I-94 at LAND crossings. By sea/air they only issue them electronically.

I POEd by land and received a paper I-94 on 12/26/13.

In which system, specifically? Are you inquiring about getting your SSN?

ETA

You will never show-up on the electronic I-94 system (if that's what you're referring to).

Yes, I was asking in the SSN context. I will be crossing the Blaine-Peace Arch border so I'm assuming I will be issued a paper I-94. I was hoping to apply for an SSN on the same day so I was wondering if the paper I-94 will be enough to take to the Social Security office and a printout of this https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211530.

Cheers!

We waited almost 2 weeks as advised by VJ and had no issues. Funny thing though, once she had her green card in hand, she couldn't do the name change because it wasn't in the system yet...which seemed odd to me.
