Legalised Police Clearance Certificate South Africa

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone who has applied for a Police Clearance Certificate in South Africa (which they have then sent on to the NVC), had the Police Clearance Certificate "Legalised" by the Legalisation Section of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), as mentioned that one should, on the South African Police Services (SAPS) website, in terms of using the Certificate abroad.

It's a bit of a hassle to get done, so I would rather not, if it is not necessary.

So if your Police Clearance Certificate was accepted without it being legalised, please let me know, as I have not been able to find any further information online.

Thanks.

Thanks everyone, appreciate the feedback!

I will get it legalised in that case.

@NYC.RSA - did you get your Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) recently? How long did it take?

Also does anyone know:

a) Does the PCC need to still be within its 6 month validity period when you go for your interview in Johannesburg?

b) Does the PCC need to still be within its 6 month validity period when you depart from SA, in terms of applying for jobs in the USA? I assume also that although it would "expire" after 6 months, it would still be "valid" in terms of the fact that you left SA within it's validity period - I.e. at the point you left SA you had a clear record and that cannot for all intense purposes change because time has elapsed which deems the PCC expired.

1. Downloaded and completed Police Clearance Form SAPS91a (http://www.policeclearance.co.za/Police%20Clearance%20Fingerprint%20Form%20SAPS91a.pdf). Note: Put your cellphone number on this form somewhere.

2. Went to local police station.

3. First paid Police Clearance Certificate fee of R59 @ the police station and obtained an invoice, before they will do your fingerprints. (Take baby wipes for your hands)

4. Download unofficial form: "Annex 23B: APPLICATION FOR A POLICE CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE" (http://www.dfa.gov.za/consular/policeclear.htm - bottom of page).

5. NB: Put fingerprint form, application form, invoice for R59 from police station as well as a copy of my ID book together in an envelope.

6. Sent driver with envelope to: Bothongo Plaza West, CRC Client Service Centre, First Floor, Room 14, 271 Frances Baard Street, Pretoria.

- A courier company

- Deliver in person

Alternate options are: But there is a high chance of it getting lost:

- Can use the postal service:

The Head of the South African Criminal Record Centre

(For attention: Police Clearance Certificates)

Private Bag X308

PRETORIA, Gauteng

South Africa

- May even be able to submit through local police station

7. On delivery they stated to my driver that on collection, the PCC can be taken next door to get legalised (best to do first thing in the morning as it gets busy and it closes at 12pm).

8. Received SMS from SAPS 3 days later stating they received my application

Now I wait patiently...

9. On notice from SAPS that it is ready, I will be sending my driver with another copy of my ID and an authorisation letter stating that I need legalisation for the US (different countries require different legalisation), there is no charge.
