Maybe I am wrong here http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/466611-a-husband-has-been-deported-after-overstaying-visa-waiver-programme/page-2#entry6781492

but if he filed for AOS before being picked up by ICE and he can prove this, how did he get deported? I thought it put your status on hold?

I thought it was only the I-130 approval with the I-485 not being concurrently filed. I ain't reading no more, and that's the end o my input.

I give my Monday at work a thumbs down.....

We handed out the W-2s today BTW.

Was there pizza?

See, I think is best to do this with pizza, as

the pizza grease gets all up in the w-2s .

It's FUN !

What news of the Moons of Honey?

Honeymoon won't be until October time when Amy has time off again. But we will be going to Florida as planned.

Edit: Forgot to mention, SSN was all good and shorter than the usual 2 weeks you suggest (I guess thanks to the automation of the I-94 and therefore entry into SAVE, maybe?). But there was one issue. Where CBP "messed up" (in the words of the SSA staffer), regarding given names (e.g. first and middle combined into first) she managed to override it and separate them for the purposes of my SSN. Not sure how, but clearly this staffer was in the know. If she couldn't do that she said I could modify it after I got the card.

Went to the Warwick, RI office if that helps, Brother D.

I figure TB will be by to update her on the details. His wife must have had to do it in the past if its required. Wonder what they do if an out of country person does not vote?

They are given voter cards with the date of the election that you need to show to get pretty much anything done in the country. Without it, you're pretty much screwed. If we were to ever go back and he didn't have the most recent card, I'm not sure what we'd do. Pay a fine, maybe?

there is big migration to the embassy, but IIRC, also can do a mail in to the embassy.

Your MIL should have told your husband all about it, given her huge background in all things electorial. :D

 Yeah, you'd think. Must've slipped her mind.

You still file taxes in 2015 for the income you earned in 2014.

I have no idea about resident or non-resident taxes stuff. I thought it applies to foreigner working in Singapore, not Singapore Citizen.

http://www.iras.gov.sg/irasHome/page04.aspx?id=104

I know that the income that I earned in US is not taxable in Singapore.

So I did not file Singapore taxes anymore after I moved to US, because I have 0 taxable income in Singapore.

Resident/non-resident for tax purposes is determined based on the number of days you're in the country (183 days in the year to be a resident). HR will be paying me up to May 2014 and then they will also be banking in a payout in December 2014 and March 2015, so I think I'll need to pay non-resident rates on those. Non-resident rates have no minimum threshold.

The one "loophole" I see is that Singapore citizens can pay resident rates if the period they are out of the country is just a temporary absence.

And speaking of international nonsense, do any of you/your foreign spouses have to vote in your/their countries of origin? Voting is obligatory in Ecuador, and I've been told when the elections roll around again hubby will have to vote, but I really have no clue where we'd do that. I guess maybe the embassy in DC? But that seems improbable, if all Ecuadorian immigrants are expected to travel from all over the country to vote at that one place. sleep.png Who knows.

That would be a pain...

Who are tax residents

You are considered a tax resident for a particular Year of Assessment (YA) if you are:

  • a Singaporean; or
  • a Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR) and have established your permanent home in Singapore; or
  • a foreigner who has stayed in Singapore for 183 days or more in the year preceding the YA; or
  • a foreigner (who is not a director of a company) who has worked in Singapore for 183 days or more in the year preceding the YA.

Tax residents may claim expenses, donations and tax reliefs to help them save tax. Find out more about deductions to save tax.

If you are a tax resident, your total income less deductions (expenses, donations and tax reliefs) will be subject to tax at progressive rates ranging from 0% to 20%. For tax residents, you may use this tax calculator (76KB) to estimate your tax payable.

Who are non-residents

You are considered a non-resident for a particular YA if you are a foreigner who stayed or worked in Singapore for less than 183 days in the previous year.

Non-residents may claim expenses and donations to save tax. However, non-residents are not eligible to claim tax reliefs.

If you are a non-resident, your employment income is taxed at 15% or the resident rate, whichever gives rise to a higher tax amount. Director fees, consultant fees and all other incomes are taxed at 20%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I could not find any information on the IRAS website whereby a Singapore citizen could be considered a non-resident.

Hmm...that's not what IRAS' email said a couple days ago...Singaporean or otherwise, since I'd only be in Singapore less than 183 days in 2014, they said I'd be a non-resident for tax purposes, unless the absence was temporary, or if I was being sent overseas by my employer (I'm not). Now what? Lol.

There's also this off IRAS. Can they be any more confusing...

Tax resident or non-resident?

You will be treated as a tax resident for a particular Year of Assessment (YA) if you are a :

• a Singaporean who normally resides in Singapore except for temporary absences; or

• a Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR) who has established your permanent home in Singapore; or

• a foreigner who has stayed / worked in Singapore (excludes director of a company) for 183 days or more in the year before the YA.

Otherwise, you will be treated as a non-resident of Singapore for tax purposes.
