Schoolteachers in Malaysia should be pretty hardcore, no? My cousins in KL are in constant fear of the "rotan", i.e. cane, their teachers keep in the desk.

Well that's why he's ok there in school? He gets outta control, he gets the cane.

Here, SIL will have to go get him in the middle of day...

Do you guys remember when I was in Malaysia? I complained about the cold shoulder my daughter got?

In retrospect....could it be that her aunts and uncle, grandparents, were actually jealous that my kid is better than "their" kid?

They want the #1 son to be better? Smarter? More well liked? Is that what it is? In part or in whole?

That doesn't surprise me at all, and I think it's very common in Southeast Asia on the whole. There is animosity to varying degrees against people who look asian, but act western (although can't blame your daughter, since she was born and raised in the US!). In Singapore there are a few words for that:

1. banana - yellow on the outside, white on the inside

2. kantang/kentang - literally "potato" as that's deemed to be the primary carb for westerners, as opposed to rice

^. Maybe worth a shot.

I've noticed that with some families, like my ex in laws that there is an incredible amount of comparing grandchildren. It was a big deal that my daughter was lighter and more lively than her cousin. Everything to them is about achievement, being better, or being more unique in some way.

Thank Trophie, of course I heard of the place. But it's the getting them there that's the hard part.

I dunno....my kid speaks a little Chinese. And she's a great kid. All the other relatives adored her. And she became very attached to a couple of tiffs cousins and uncles.

It was tiffs sisters and tiffs parents that gave her the cold shoulder. I was bitterly disappointed.

Maybe jealousy had something to do with it. It's sad. My in laws were here in the USA when my daughter was born. They left for Malaysia when she was 4 months. Against my advice. That's another story...

i brought lunch today - wholemeal wrap with smoked salmon, lettuce, sliced cherry tomatoes and yoghurt dressing.

now i feel like tossing that and indulging in a pint of rocky road instead.
