Oh, I believe in "Minnesota Nice"..

I think it is hard to make friends in Minnesota...

yes.gifyes.gifyes.gif A lot of Minnesotans still hang out with the same people they did in high school.

Its hard to join into a group of people that have been hanging out together since they were kids.

It kind of sounds a lot like Scandinavia. Most people have long term 1 - 2 friends and it is really hard to get in the inner circle. I didn't think that would be a problem on a place like Minneapolis, though.

There are at lot of Filipinos who are easily mistaken for South Americans. Your wife looks more towards the Asian side though. Ex-husband's family looked kind of Maori - big, tall, very Pacific Island looking. Although pictures of one side of his family I have trouble telling apart the Filipinos from Mexicans and Asians, not that it matters.

Funny you say she looks Asian, I always think she barely looks Asian. To me its in the eyes, she hasn't got the typical asian eyes. In fact none of her family does.

I understand about Maori look in Filipinos though. Theres a lot of them with that look. Although the height part of it isn't common in many parts of the islands there. Appears to depend on how good their diet was growing up. Poverty I think keeps many of them much smaller than they could have grown up to be.

Stop being a nut? Maybe you'll get friends?

Yeah......

Actually, I don't have a lot of friends either. Just 1 or 2, depending on the definition of friend.....

I'm not a nut. I just work with a load of older Somalians and like 3 white people.

I love a guy who looks like he could be on Criminal Minds as either an agent or a killer.

So true, my husband only hangs out with his friends from high school..

It is even harder for me, I feel that there is a barrier, like no common topic to talk about.

My hubby said, I should just talk about the weather with people blink.png

what? I thought most minnesotaans made new friends during the winter time, during the ice-fishing excursions during the day or night.

not ice-fishing, you say? time to get busy. bring 3 bottles of liquor on your first excursion, also.

OMG, it is just like Denmark. I asked my husband what was the first thing I should learn in Danish, his answer was "how to talk about the weather." Which I don't really understand because Denmark is cloudy and rainy almost every day and somewhere always between 30 to 65 F. Not much to talk about.

You do realize how many Scandinavians we have here, don't you?

Its a problem even in Minneapolis. What you need to do is find other transplants to the state, or even those that have moved from outstate. And/or find a place and activity that can be shared in common with them. Then its not that hard to become part of the group. But meeting new people that you start hanging out with, visiting each other's homes and such, it ain't that easy here.

Meetup.com is a good way to meet people with common interests.

ya, the natives make for a Balkanized social environment. Find the implants, form yer own group. Or memorize 12 of the 'Tales from Lake WoeBeGone' from Garrison Keilor and start telling his stories at yer next Minnesota gathering. They may not give you input, but at least you'll have a captive audience.

Ice fishing = beer drinking and pee on the lake.

You don't pee in the lake. You wanna make the fish stinky? You pee in the porta-potty in the fish house.

Actually ice fishing is a great way to make friends here. Get yerself a fish house, get it put on a resort lake, through the resort services. Before you know it, you'll be friends with an entire crowd of people who like to drink and pretend to fish.
