Definitely! But I think the best way to start a kid ice skating is not on rentals - they're stiff, they sometimes stink and they hurt. You can get inexpensive kid skates on Amazon that will be much better fitted and have at least some cushion to support tiny feet. I used to coach and it killed me to see so many kids cry the moment the skates are on cos they pinch or it makes their arches or shins hurt.

Look....a Tropicanan giving a North American pointers on ice skating lol

Skates are supposed to be tight, real tight. They hurt !

I kind of thought the toe pick would be a liability for a clumsy 5 year old whose never skated before?

Any tips for beginning skaters?

You just said you're a skater. Teach the kid how to skate.

I'm gonna start teaching my kid too. She got her inspiration tonight.

The good thing about leather skates (compared to plastic rentals) is that they will conform to the shape of your feet, so even though they're laced up real tight, your toes will still be able to wiggle. Can't skate without blood circulation, see. :P Even the skates competitive skaters use, they're hard like granite, but they can be broken in over time. Plastic, not so much.

there's pros and cons...having a rounded blade towards the front means you'll be less aware of yourself slipping foward till it's too late. the plus side is that the fall won't be as abrupt as if you tripped over your toepick. i like to play tippytoes with my tots skating class which is where the toepick comes in handy. do 'marching' (start with marching on the spot then move to small steps forward), and progress into two-foot gliding. once she's got a good glide, she'll be whizzing round the ice. smile.png

and as all coaches would say "arms up!" helps you find your centre of gravity hehe.

That's great advice!

It is so terrible, I've had to just watch youtube videos so I could remember how to skate properly. rofl.gif I'm kind of frightened what will happen if I take the little one skiing this winter and I pizza my way down the mountain. I can just hear myself saying, "no, but really I used to race," just like I'm going to be saying with the skating. Oh how far we fall.

did you know that Julie Chu is from CT?

Go Nola's kid !!

Well, there you go.

hockey skates vs figure skates is like comparing a kia to a ferrari. tongue.png you can do pretty much everything hockey skaters do on figure skates.

Oh no way man. Figure skates cannot accelerate, turn, and stop like hockey skates.

Figure skates are designed to glide on long curves and spin.

Actually, figure blades are generally faster and more powerful blades than hockey blades. The hockey blade is more forgiving when it comes to balancing (set in the middle instead of towards the ball of the foot).

All this talk about skating, I think I might head to the rink tonight hehe.

Someone enjoys blowing leaves 6 months out of every year.

Been doing it more this winter than usual, that I can remember. The casa is almost at the wrongest spot on the street in regard to receiving what's dropped or washed or thrown or blown, sigh man. The across-street neighbor's mongo oak tree has been toying with us, too, with much more to come.
