Well in canada many people dont have to pay for health care and if you do have provincial premiums its like $250 every 3 months. You dont pay to have a c-section, cancer treatment or a broken leg. My mother is one of those people who will pay out the nose to save a pet. Me, not so much (hence I chose to have the foal pulled vs a c-section, horse wasn't worth that much.) But a vet makes 70-100k a year. I dont claim to understand it, but it is what it is. A vet tech in canada makes up to $25/hr but start at $14 or 15. Here they start at $10.

Obviously medical doctors are paid more than vets and many oil workers make a killing. Lawyers are still paid a premium as well. I never said vets make more than medical doctors or lawyers, just that they were highly paid professionals, some of the top in canada, of the same grade as medical, lawyer, dentist, etc... I'm not sure at all why it feels like we're arguing this? Unless my annoyance with the USA at the moment seems To be striking a cord. Which I apologize for. My annoyance with a system I dont understand is largely due to my lack of understanding why it would work the way it does. Plus I miss home. Plain and simple. Im happy to be going back to visit.

I wasn't arguing, sorry if you thought I was. I was just pointing out the reasons why vets make less in the USA. There was a time I wanted to be a vet, and even started school for it, so I'm a little bit aware of how it works, although some of my info is a bit dated. I came to the conclusion it was too hard to get into school, cost too much, school would last too long, for certainly too little return. BTW I don't understand the Canadian system either, and it would probably piss me off to. Certain vets make a killing here, others make very little. A country vet makes very little for the most part. Driving between farms, doing simple or even complex procedures on farms, then waiting on another call. A vet in a high class neighborhood can do very well if he sets up his clinic right. Note the big push to do dental work on dogs the past few years. Scruffy has tartar and gum disease. We can clean his teeth for $1000 plus another $600 put him under. Much more than a dentist would charge, thats for sure. Given the right practice, a vet can make decent money.

I had a foster dog that had a cancerous tumor. The high class city vet wanted $5000 to operate and begin to treat her. They charged us $125 to give us a quote, and didn't even look at her! No way could the rescue swing that, and she was a senior dog to. We took her to a country vet that operated on her for a couple hundred, and she did just great. Now the country vet isn't making much money, but he's actually helping animals. The high class vet appeared to me to only be out to help his pocket book. Wonder where he starts his vet techs at? That dog saw both extremes in the vet industry.

But the real point is why vet tech pay is so low. And basically over half of vet tech graduates will never get a job as a vet tech. The schools are just pushing out too many of them. Also their is no shortage of vets in the USA either. Vet care might not be cheap, but its much cheaper than human medical care. And part of that is the supply, and the other part is what people are willing to pay for it, or the demand.

It depends on what kind of movies you like.

I saw The Wolf Of Wall Street on Tuesday.

I haven't heard so many f*** word in one movie till now laughing.gif

Just read that it was said 506 times in this movie. 3 times per 1 minute..

My daughter wants to be a vet tech. But she has a major disability and can't get into college/school to be able to do anything like it. I wish she could do like the used to do and just train you on the spot she would be able to learn that way. Atm she has her own little etsy shop and is doing pretty good for herself. Too bad she has a hole in her pocket when it comes to money.

The old way of on the job training was better for so many reasons, it is too bad it has mostly disappeared. Could your daughter do something else pet related like dog walking or grooming?

The f*** if I know.

Was wondering that too actually.

F***ing Hollywood. Guess they figured no one would come unless it was full of f***ing swearing.

As a teenager, my brothers and I had a group of friends over one time. All of us were talking away in the living room, my mother gets home from work and hears us talking away with a lot of swear words mixed in. She comes storming into the living room, and lets loose

"What's with all the Go*damned F***ing cussing going on in here? Where the f*** did you bastards learn such G*damned F***ing language?"

I'm serious to, that is exactly what she said, I don't think I'll ever forget it. Given the f bombs she dropped and GD's in her statement, all of us teenagers totally lost it, falling all over ourselves in laughter. My mother stormed out of the room cussing away, pissed off at us.

47 Ronin supposedly was not good.

good to know. Not gonna go see it in the movies then cause hubby is not terribly willing so I wont push for it and just watch it when it comes out vid. Thanks.

Took a walk with the dog...it is so cold even she did not want to walk. Of course pooped and had a string hanging off her butt...dumped her in the sink and washed the runny turds. /sigh It bugs me that they keep saying it is not my dog so I don't forget about it. Sure as hell feels like my dog. /territorial

Trying to sell a property back home so I can pay my sister back for her loan and my hubby and his parents, need clean slate badly.

They have grooming schools to. Although I would think they're more hands on training than classroom type stuff.

Anything school related is a no go. She has a grade 3 very early grade 3 math and reading comprehension. I've been looking at disability here trying to figure it out, she had it when we were in Canada.

Unfortunately, theres a lot of schooling to become an animator. If she can be an artist, then more power to her! All that matters is people find it pleasing and want to buy. One of my daughters tried the etsy.com site. Hasn't worked out for her though.

It is a supply/demand issue for vet techs here. Lots of people want to be vet techs and it doesn't take much training, so the pay is low. I don't consider 70-100 to be that high paying. so maybe vets in America make that much, but that makes them middle class, IMO. A lot of doctors here are making 300k+, with the exception of GPs and pediatricians. Lawyer pay is pretty variable in America and a lot of them are not making good money and are desperate for work.

You'll find that if you don't have a high education or some luck it is hard to get out of poverty or the $10/hour job market. My husband was incredibly lucky here that he found a job that had a starting pay of $15/hr despite him having no high school diploma (even his previous job of super here only pays $10). There is a huge disparity between the rich and the poor in CT, but there is also a big social safety net.

Complain away, I think it is a problem. The incomes are too disparate and despite what people will say a CEO in this country does not need to be paid what they are being paid.

The Northeast has its own salary charts that's far different than the rest the the nation (except Cali)

Vets make a fortune here too...
