the thing I will say on my next interview whenever that will be:

At a job interview:

"What are your strengths ?"

"I am an optimist and a positive thinker."

"Can you give me an example?"

"Yes: when do I start ?"

Job interviews are tough for both the interviewer and potential employee. Especially in a smaller company.

I briefly interviewed 2 of the last 3 employees in our place. Besides the main questions in regards to competence, training, experience, etc.... some of the side questions that I silently asked myself was.....

Would I like to sit down and have lunch with this person? *(this perhaps the most important)

Will this person "be a company man?" (Tarklar would be a good fit)

What does this person have to put on the table?

Is this person a Giants or Jets fan? Mets or Yankees? (This is more important than you think)

When it comes down to it, people hire people they like. Like your internal question, about having lunch with them.

My wife was very worried going into interviews here. Constantly thinking about how she's an immigrant, a different race, schooling in the different country, etc...

I told her none of that mattered, just smile and be friendly. People cannot resist her smile, she's one of those people with a smile people are drawn to. When they see her smile, they just want to do things to make her smile again, and it totally worked. She's gotten every job she had a personal interview with.

I say that's very true statement.

In a brief interview. It's a sales transaction, and a battle..... The applicant has 5- 10 minutes to overcome what obstacles he/ she has perceived, and at the same time, become the interviewer's best friend. When and if that happens, the applicant is hired.

I once asked an applicant how was the commute to the interview. He said he drove. So I asked him what kind of car? he said...a 1985 prelude. I made fun of it. He loved it, and joked about it.... 3 weeks later, we were still joking about that car....needless to say, he was hired.

Then there are those that set the precedence with their impressive "tailored to fit" resume....

Being in a technical field, the resumes can be pretty darn boring. Lots of software and hardware knowledge needs to be communicated and also knowledge of different types of machines and processes. They end up being huge lists that make even the writer want to fall asleep. So last time I needed to write a resume, I wrote the story of my career instead. I went from school through the different companies I'd worked with, and the work I did with those companies. Throwing in a few stories of interesting projects I had worked on. When I had my first interview with the company that hired me then, the interviewer said it was the first technical resume he had actually completely read, because it was actually interesting.

What I did with the resume, was grab their attention and began making friends with someone at the same time as getting across that I did have the background and knowledge to do the job. I found out later the interview was just a formality, the company had 90% decided to hire me based on the resume alone.

You had one of those resumes that I was talkin bout.....

I don't know what made me decide to go that way. I had pulled out the old resume and updated it, when I kept thinking how totally boring these things are. Then I opened a new file and just started writing a story. When I finished, I read it over and said this beats the hell out a traditional resume and it they don't like it, then I don't think they're the type of people I want to work with.

did Juna go to work today? Or did she do one a those....

"Sorry, ethnic observation" thingys?

(Like I did) smile.png

She went to work this morning. This year no big CNY celebration. She's on her period, and its a rough one, so I think she wasn't up to doing more than wishing me a happy new year. Oh and we need to make sure we don't fight today or we'll fight all year long laughing.gif Funny thing is, I never fight with her. But she'll get upset about something, usually when PMSing, and go into tampo mode. She calls her not talking to me fights.

Yeah a boring resume sucks eggs. I don't read them.

I don't even use a resume anymore lol. I "network". It works smile.png

yes.gif I've been in this industry too long to need a resume now. And I don't really have any intention of working anywhere else but my current position. If it goes away, I'm retiring.
