Just to clarify a couple of things:

1) A TIN can NOT be simply procured. Currently, a TIN can only be procured if the "taxpayer" is unable to secure a SSN. If not, the TIN is applied for simultaneously with the submission of a federal income tax return. Thus, for example, if you (the American) and your spouse (the residen alien) plan to submit your income tax return for 2006 jointly, then you would attach the W-7 to the return and send it to a special address. The TIN is then issued.

2) To my knowledge, the bank only needs a SSN/TIN for tax purposes. Thus, a TIN would satisfy the bank...and any other entity required by the U.S. government to obtain an identification number from someone for tax purposes (such as mutual funds).

3) After forcing the issue with my health care provider, they ackowledged that neither an SSN or TIN was necessary for insurance. They simply prefer it because it "works" with their "system."

Good luck.

Mike

Hi Folks,

My honey is here in the States now. I was wondering which one should I file EAD or AOS or Both. All I care for now is getting SS#. I'd highly appriciate your help.

Thanks

Since EAD is optional why would you do both (and incur the expense) if she is not urgent to work.

Why are you "hot" for an SSN?

The EAD will take about 3 months. The AOS could take longer. I suggest doing both.

Feb. 15/ 07 --- GC approved

Nov. 17/09 -- I-751 sent (Day 1)
