Here's an idea... if we saved our data (VJ's estimates) for the approximate dates USCIS was working on as of the last days of each month, when the updates came from uscis we'd be able to see how accurate they actually are. I mean, who remembers what day VisaJourney said USCIS was processing on November 30, 2013, when it's now January 15, 2014.

If we had that information saved somewhere and accessible, we could determine (with a reasonable amount of surety, based on our comparitively small sample size) whether the USCIS' released data has any relationship to where they actually were at that time, or whether it's really a more-or-less random date, assigned (as we often believe) to allow the minimum number of people any opportunity to register concerns or complaints.

Does this sound like a reasonable idea? Doable?
