So is it a profit grab when someone risks his or her life savings works 80 hours a week making things in the business run...Realistically,you need to run a business or two before you understand how wages are set. It all comes down to numbers and meeting payroll.Now you throw in the high cost of his electric bill and uncertainty of kenyan kare due to your president and it is a wonder there are not more business on the edge of closing..

He's your president too. Whether you voted for him or even like him. Sucks doesn't it?

Too be fair, some of those employees work for franchises owners that aren't super rich. You know, the poor old mom and pops that ponied up $1 million plus LIQUID to get a McDonald's franchise. Those poor guys.

The McDonald's Corporation requires a minimum of $250000 of non-borrowed personal resources.. So You borrow against your home, cash in your 401k. A lot of people that you disdain are willing to make this gamble .... roll the dice on everything they own to be self employed. You work 80 hours a week... loose countless hours of sleep praying you can make payroll. Sunday night when all your friends are at the sports bar watching the game you are pouring over the books at the shop or you are fixing that sink that started leaking so you save on the cost of a high priced repairman . It is a shame you hate entrepreneurship so much. It is what made this country great.

The mcdonalds in my town are owned by two different companies. Both are family owned and old money. So, they would not fit your description of the struggling owners. Not sure how to debate how many are struggling owners vs old inherited money as this would be a difficult stat to conjure.

So give these people with the inherited money some credit. They are willing to put that money on the line and employ people in your community. Why does old money bother you?

It doesn't bother me. I was just pointing out that they weren't all like the ones you described. What does bother me is that the wealth gap is growing and growing. And that the lowest paid people make less and less as things get more expensive. Give the low earners a chance to not have to subsidize what they make with tax money from you and I. Right?

Unless someone can make a ROI that is worth the risk involved they will not hire anyone. The money gets invested or used on a big boat at the summer cottage. The business HAS to pay for itself. I have always been involved in businesses that paid a little more than min. wage... WHY They wanted to attract people that could read write and think. ... I have seen people cause fifty thousand dollars in damages to machinery in my past. The owner eats this cost or sometimes insurance. ...Often production suffers during this down time. People (workers)sent home. This dictates you offer more to start than you would make at McDonalds. on the other hand you need to get more production out of you employees than handing out coffee.

There is an awful lot to running a company that the average person never sees. When it is a small company a person is doing many different jobs at the same time. A great percentage of small companies fail in the first 5 years. You really need to put your toe in the water to grasp what many of these people are up against. Not easy

I know. Its not like I'm suggesting small business owners are evil. I just think a person working full time on minimum wage should not need government assistance to live. That doesn't mean I think they deserve to make a killing. I just don't want to have to subsidize their wages or healthcare. I want the workers to be able to do all that themselves. Many places cannot find entry level workers. There are jobs that it can take 6 months to train a worker. 6 months before you start to make money from that employee. Yes he is doing work for you.... A trained worker can set up a machine in 30 minutes with little corrections. The newly hired maybe 1 1/2 hours and then another 30 minutes "tweaking " the machine. Then everyone makes mistakes. Then the new hire maybe runs things not to speck. $5000 of material is thrown away. It is all in the learning process. Point is a worker can be with you for 6 months before you start to make a dime off his labor. Once that skill level is up to snuff. You can pay him more. This is what happens in business. Then you really get kicked in the teeth is you train this person and fails his drug test. Out the door he goes and business man starts from day one again. . THAT, is a wasted opportunity.

Cry me a river. Most low wage employees work for large business that are hugely profitable and pay their executives millions of dollars. That's the reality of it all.
