  1. 1. Increasing the minimum wage would curtail illegal immigration and reduce spending on safety net programs without reducing unemployment. Your thoughts?

    • Maybe true in California. I suppose it depends on the nature of the minimum wage jobs in each state.
    • Bullpuckey! The minimum wage should not be increased.
    • Bullpuckey! The minimum wage should be eliminated.
    • True everywhere in the country. Raise the minimum wage nationwide.

No, these are smart people that understand that extreme wealth and income concentration is not good for the economy and is thus not good for anyone including the rich. It's the stuff that banana republics are built on but not much more.

If this is so good, then why not raise the minimum wage to $200/hour?

If you don't want to seriously discuss the issue at hand, then why bump into the thread at all?

My comment is absolutely serious. If one thinks that minimum wage should be raised because those workers make too little money, certainly $200/hour would help them more than $15/hour.

Well, the thing is, $200 is unreasonable. Raising the minimum wage to say $10 is not unreasonable. There are discussions for sure to be had on the economic/social impact of raising the minimum wage. And then there are outlandish comments made in an attempt to discredit any discussion before it happens, usually based in deep rooted, unyielding political extremism.

If we want to help the poor, we should enslave women in other countries and force them to do sexual favors for our poor.

If you're not willing to do that, you're clearly unserious about helping the poor and are therefore unworthy of my attention.

Yeah

Please, do not words into my mouth or pretend to know what is in my brain. An attempt at doing these things is "outlandish." Just trying to have stimulating discussion, unlike your editorialization and comments, which are intended to silence opposing viewpoints.

A very valid point can be made that it is very difficult to draw a line between what is "reasonable" and what is not. Who are you to judge? In fact, that is what the argument is about here - where should that line be? This is a slippery slope and moving target. And some people are never satisfied.

It's absolutely not a serious comment. Pretending otherwise doesn't make it so.

Funny how "hyperbole" is OK for you but NEVER for others.

You said $200 as a starting point. California minimum wage is currently $8. You said $200 because you equated any increase to "why not just give them the world"

Now, a fun discussion would be, should California minimum wage be raised from $8 to say $15 (give or take). We could then discuss what the possible implications might be from an increase instead of immediately dismissing it with something way way way above what people are actually asking for.

I respectfully disagree. I think the main discussion should be whether to raise the minimum wage at all. That is my point.
