Sorry to clutter the place up but I can't find what I'm looking for. I've sent off for my police check, so expecting my medical in the next two weeks. I have no medical history in the UK so would need to get any vaccines etc ahead of time (as I understand they're extremely expensive during the medical). I cannot however find a list anywhere of what I need to have. Can anyone provide? I am a healthy Irish national and have spent approx 2 years in Australia from 2008 to 2010 if that makes any difference.

So accoring to this page, as a 32 year old man, I need:

An antibody titers blood test showing proof of immunity to tetanus and diphtheria

An antibody titers blood test showing proof of immunity to MMR (mumps/measles/rubella).

An antibody titers blood test showing proof of immunity to chickenpox (varicella).

Influenza jab

Sound right? Can I get an antibody titers test on the NHS?

You don't need chickenpox (varicella). The vaccine isn't routinely available in the UK and will be waived if you simply say "yes" to "have you ever caught it?".

Thanks lost_at_sea. Presumably all this will be covered by the antibody titers test anyways? i was just going to get that done plus an influenza jab.

Yeah, I guess so. You can ask when you get the titers done.

Absolutely. Have a phone appointment with my GP tomorrow, they want to talk about it before they order the test apparently.

Side question while I have you - do i pay for the medical on the day or when I book it?

Is a WHO International Certificate of Vaccination (the yellow booklet the doctor marks when one receives a vaccination) acceptable for showing one's vaccination history for the medical? If so, and if BrianK has one documenting some or all of the required vaccines, it could cut down on or eliminate bloodwork and revaccinations.

Thanks again lost_at_sea.

Another quick question - it says here "A copy of (your) police certificate must be presented to the panel physician on the day of the medical examination" - can I bring the original and have them copy it, or should I bring the original and a photocopy, or should I get some sort of official copy of the certificate?

Either. They won't keep your original if you take that, IIRC.

Great thanks.

I've had a bit of back and forth this morning - my GP said the titers test can't be done on the NHS, so will have to go private. Rang a local private hospital who said it's approx £50 per test, but will have to be done on a referral from the GP, now have to go back to the GP to get the referral. Starting to wonder if I can get all this done before a medical. Bah!

Starting to wonder if it would be easier just to get the shots - the one that concerns me is the Tetanus Diphtheria shot as it appears I'd need to wait at least eight weeks before I could do the medical?

If you have no proof of a primary series you must begin an adult series of TWO doses of Td 4 to 8 weeks apart with a third dose 6 to 12 months after the second. You must be as up-to-date as possible with your series at the time of your immigration medical.

Brian I am going through the same thing mate. Its seems your GP isn't being very accommodating.

Luckily I have Tetanus/Diptheria shot already (documented) . So my GP arranged for me to have the titers blood test for MMR (on the NHS) *waiting for the result) if I am immune great. But he still going to give me a MMR shot as the US require you have had 3 in a lifetime. (They won't reject you if you haven't but you will need to satisfy the criteria when you AOS for CR-1 or IR-1). Also gave my influenza shot on the NHS.

I'd challenge your Dr and ask why some patients are getting on the NHS? Maybe just book an appointment with the practice nurse there thats what I did....she was amazing.

If you have to pay 3 x £50 privately for Titlers might be better to get what shots you can from your GP (NHS) and then have say one shot at Knightsbridge.

Good Luck.

See I asked him about it and he said "i can take the test but if I send it to *local hospital* they'll ask what it's for. If I say green card, they'll reject it and say it has to be done privately".

Hrumph. Not sure what the best step here is. I've only really been to my local practice once, got a completely different doctor to who I'm dealing with now, and when I rang a few days ago to try to book a titers test, it took 24 hours just to get a doctor to call me back to say they wouldn't do the test. Wish I could get someone to sit down and go over everything with me so I could get on with the process.
