Hi all

Was hoping for some advice here. What's the deal with getting coverage during AOS and once I have the GC?

I tried messing about with the (generally useless) Marketplace website but it couldn't verify me using my SSN as I'm not a citizen. I'm at a loss as to where I can find affordable, simple healthcare for myself and my wife (her work doesn't provide it). I can't be bothered to trawl endless websites only for them to say "computer says no" because they can't match my documents up or whatever....

Anyone with experience I would appreciate your advice...!

Thanks

Then don't try and verify using just your SSN. Part of the online form asks about your status, filling that part in worked for me. Sorry I can't recall what I used, think it was either my I-94 or alien registration number. It took us dozens of attempts before it finally accepted us, so just keep trying. glad to say we finally got coverage that is very affordable, I'm sure you will as well.

Hey - not sure what you mean "with just my SSN"...I put my EAD card number in there too...wasn't having it. What a fiasco!

I put that simply because you said "I tried messing about with the (generally useless) Marketplace website but it couldn't verify me using my SSN as I'm not a citizen"

Like I said earlier, I filled out that form dozens of times before it verified us. We also phoned the very unhelpful helpline several times, only for them to have the same problems. Just keep trying you will finally get your healthcare through the marketplace website.

Thanks I'll keep plugging away at it! And you're absolutely right - they helpline is totally useless! If you're English and you know the phrase "computa sez naaahhhh" then you'll know what I'm talking about!!!

did your partner enter as a fiancé? I just cant figure out which option to pick from that drop down list first of all because I don't know what an I-94 looks like also I wouldn't know who issued it. can you remember which one you picked?

We went directly to the underwriter. Gave both SSN's that was it. Done in 10 minutes.

Some here in VJ have posted they needed to provide proof of legal status.

The I-94 isn;t going to help you, it will expire in 90 days. Your NOA1 for the AOS will be your status until you get the green card.

Another option which we used when my wife first arrived, is short term health insurance. Very inexpensive. About $80 / month. It will buy you some time until you get something else.

Where did you manage to find coverage for $80pcm ? And what sort of cover do you get for that ?

It was short term health through Assurant. 5,000 ded, 100% after that. The catch is it is non-renewable. You sign up for a term, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months. And that's all you get, so the statistics favor the underwriter. Hence the low premium.

It is strictly gap insurance, not a long term option. Theoretically, you could sign up for 6 months with one company, then 6 months with another company, etc. But you would run out of options pretty quickly.
