no. i'll make my own choices, ty.

You should promote the idea that guns have no place when you go out on the town as a matter of practicality and basic safety. If you do not think it's sensible to leave your gun at home when you go to the theater, out to a movie or on a date you are suffering from some very strange delusion as to what is and isn't appropriate behaviour.

I'm sure that some here believe it was justified. It wasn't, of course. It is another case of a "good guy with a gun" instigating a confrontation and then turning into the bad guy with a gun. If the author of Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law had his way, the statute would be amended to ensure that nobody could claim self defense in a situation where they felt threatened as a result of a confrontation they caused. That defense was never meant to be covered under the statute but hundreds of people have gotten away with murder because it was.

Yes this law is definitely effed up if it does allow people to instigate confrontations and then shoot the person they picked a fight with, especially if they know they are the only one with a gun. There should be no circumstance where someone can start a fight and then argue that they 'suddenly felt their life was in danger, pull the gun, shoot the other person and claim that it's self defense. That's just wrong and that anomaly should be addressed. Perhaps this case will lead to the law being revisited if the guy is genuinely going to use syg as his defense.

That's the thing Charles, it's not just my opinion. It should matter to you if your behavioyr with a gun is not reasonable and you should be able to work out the difference between reasonable and risky behaviour. You have less of an excuse than most because you have been in the armed forces and the armed forces to not promote this cavalier attitude with guns and ammunition.

The US is a safe place and a gun should not simply be part of your wardrobe. I know there are a lot of sensible gun owners who do follow the maxim that there is a time and a place for guns and movie theaters and restaurants are not that time or that place. These people are overshadowed by paranoid gun aficionados who see criminals in every shadow and feel like invulnerable super heroes when they strap on the gun. That's nuts and sensible gun owners should divorce themselves from such aficionados and quickly.

I don't get the difference that the guy being an ex cop makes to the discussion. At the end of the day, the guy killed someone over nothing. If he didn't have a gun, the guy probably wouldn't be dead. No one has ever died from being the target of strong language. Bullets on the other hand...

It's a silly law to be sure.

It only matters if you are trying to make a distinction between 'good gun owners' and 'bad gun owners' when the gun owner is legally carrying a gun into a movie theater and then commits a crime against an unarmed fellow movie goer for irritating behaviour. Otherwise, it doesn't matter one jot. A movie goer is DEAD because a gun owner decided to make their point with a bullet rather than accept that there are people in the world who are irritating.

You would have thought some of the gun aficionados would be upset by that, but apparently they are not.

I don't see why no one would denounce this sort of behaviour, it's demented.

And it matters if the guy was a cop. Cops are no good trigger happy morons to the gun aficionados. The guy being an ex-cop gives them an out. Now they don't have to admit bad behavior by a gun owner.

From you. You have poo pooed my suggestion that sensible gun owners should promote the idea that there are places that one should not feel it is reasonable or rational to take a gun such as going out for night out. That demonstrates a cavalier attitude to arms and ammunition.

You might wish to look up the definition of hyperbole ;)

I didn't say you acted in a cavalier fashion, I said you shouldn't promote acting in a cavalier fashion with arms and ammunition and yet time and time again you do.

again, it's your opinion how sensible gun owners should act - all according to you - as is your claim about acting cavalierly. your opinion noted and discarded.
