Medical Examination

Hi guys,

I have applied for the I-130 for my husband and we are currently waiting on our NOA2. Our application was transferred on the 3rd of Jan though we are still waiting on the hard copy to determine where it is being processed.

I understand that once we have our approval my husband will need to undergo a medical by an approved physician. Our closest approved physicians are 5 hours away, either in Sydney or Melbourne (we live half way between them). We're going to be in Melbourne later this week so I was wondering if it would be worth us trying to get the medical done while we are down there.

I checked the country specific documents required for the medical from the NVC thread and I gather we just need the following:

- Completed Examination Instructions - http://travel.state.gov/content/dam/visas/Medical/SYD%20-%20Sydney along with the appropriate medical documents (x-rays, immunisation record, etc.)

- DS 2053. I'm having trouble locating a copy of this online - the most recent version I found has an expiration date of 07/31/13. I'll continue looking for a more recent copy but if anyone has a link to it that'd be great

Can anyone see any major issues with this? I couldn't find anything which specifically said you had to wait for your medical until you had approval - just pages saying that you should get your medical done prior to your interview.

Are there any other forms that need to be completed for the medical?

Any direction on this would be appreciated.

An I-130 is not something that you apply for, it is petition form that is filed. Furthermore, they transferred your petition, not an application.

I understand that once we have our approval my husband will need to undergo a medical by an approved physician. Don't bother trying to do the medical at this time. An interview at the Consulate in Sydney needs to be scheduled before it will be possible to have the medical done. I know it is possible to have the medical done before an interview is schedule in some countries but I don't know if Australia is one of them; however, in countries where it is possible, the file needs to be on-station at the NVC and a NVC case number assigned.

That expiration date is the expiration of the comment period to the Office of Management and Budget, the form itself is not expired. So if that is the only form available, then it is usable.

You'd have to double check if Australia is one of the countries that allows medicals to be done before you have your interview. I'm pretty sure they are not. So you would have to wait until your i-130 is approved, then transfered to NVC, case completed at NVC with interview date set - then you can get it done, and you would need to bring in your interview info given from NVC...

Also the ds-2053 is filled out by the panel physician. They have the form.

In Australia you can do the medical before approval no problem, the receptionist at the Melbourne clinic told me herself. Although I'm going to wait till I get case number from NVC.
