I have no issues with folks who carry for personal protection. But I disagree that it's something that needs to be on your person 24/7 in order for you to feel safe. I've learned that most confrontations can be avoided with a level head and some kind words. And I've lived in places some folks here wouldn't go without an armed escort and a tank as a back up measure. I'm more likely by stats alone to be killed than the folks here who need a gun on their hip when they go pee in the toliet in their homes. Yet, I don't carry a gun when I go out.

As for Trayvon? That's a no win situation. If he had a gun and killed Zimmerman in self defense, there's no way he wouldn't be in jail right now. Not to mention he would have been painted as a thug with a gun, which would make people more scared than they are right now.

There is actually some evidence that media reporting of rapes and sexual assaults increases women's fear of its occurrence. In other words, it increases fear.

So I would say that anyone who carries a weapon out of fear occupies the demented end of the scale. However, if you're going to carry a weapon, non lethal is better.

Very untrue postulations. I own guns. I don't live in fear of armed confrontation. No one in my family has ever been harmed by one of my guns, unless you count a pinched finger. No risk of gunfire because all my kiddos respect guns. It's all very rational.

Your family is statistically at a higher risk of falling victim to gun fire than mine. Simple as that. Your lack of acknowledgement of that simple fact doesn't change it. You can certainly refuse to acknowledge that driving to the ariport is more dangerous than flying in a commercial jetliner and then point to your safe driving record as proof. But the simple fact remains that you're statistacally at a higher risk of injury or death on your way to the airport than you are when flying in a commercial jetliner.

If I wanted to buy a gun, I would purchase a smart gun. My wife doesn't like guns and we have an infant son, so no guns in our household for now.
