That's usually the prompt for me to start posting dancing cat gifs and what not.

Yeah. Trayvon will prolly get this thread closed unfortunately. The point is, there are hundreds and thousands of people who do not EXPECT or ANTICIPATE confrontation who are dead today. Just like Paul Walker and Ms. Venezuela. Pushing a gas pedal does not normally kill folks. Driving home either. But sometimes, it ends in death, whether or not we anticipate it. Whether or not I own guns has NO BEARING on my probability of being accosted by an armed assailant.

People with and without college educations get jobs all the time. So why go to college? To increase our chances of success.

People with and without guns get into confrontations every day. So why carry a gun? To increase our chances of success.

Not everyone chooses to carry, and not everyone chooses college. It's a personal choice. Glad I live in a country where I have a choice, even if other issues currently ongoing make it less than optimal.

you're assuming that will be the outcome.

You know, that's what I would think but its difficult to say. The US has one of the highest percentages of guns per capita and a relatively low gun homicide rate when compared to some other countries with lower gun ownership. Which would strengthen the pro-gun argument. But, across Asia, they have very low rates of gun ownership and very low rates of gun homicide. So its really hard to say definitively one way or the other as there clearly are more factors at work here than how many guns exist.

Yet your 'rational' argument assumes that at some point you will be victimised.

Did I say that? I have only been confronted by a gun-waving nut once, and lived (he was gesturing with it, not sure it was even loaded; as far as I'm concerned, though, if you pull a gun on someone, you show the desire to pull the trigger and kill). And once I was robbed, but I was away, so having or not having a gun would not have mattered in the latter case. So I live my days as if I will never be accosted (much like you seem to), because I think the likelihood of it happening is low. Same reason I don't buy lotto tickets. Yet I feel people should have the right to own guns and buy lotto tickets. That's all I'm saying. And that if I get a say in the matter, I'd prefer to go up against armed conflict with a gun in my hands. If I don't, I know my chances are nil that I will come out ahead. If NOT having guns in an armed conflict were the better solution, we would not arm our military when they go to battle.

I have no issues with folks who carry for personal protection. But I disagree that it's something that needs to be on your person 24/7 in order for you to feel safe. I've learned that most confrontations can be avoided with a level head and some kind words. And I've lived in places some folks here wouldn't go without an armed escort and a tank as a back up measure. I'm more likely by stats alone to be killed than the folks here who need a gun on their hip when they go pee in the toliet in their homes. Yet, I don't carry a gun when I go out.

As for Trayvon? That's a no win situation. If he had a gun and killed Zimmerman in self defense, there's no way he wouldn't be in jail right now. Not to mention he would have been painted as a thug with a gun, which would make people more scared than they are right now.

Why should a woman have to carry a weapon when she leaves the house?

Maybe if men could get their ####### together and keep their cocks in their pants, we wouldn't have this problem.

I love a guy who looks like he could be on Criminal Minds as either an agent or a killer.

he was not old enough to legally own a firearm, so yes, that would have been the outcome.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

Same thought process should go for the folks that need 6 guns on their person to go eat at Mcdonalds. But a criminal is a criminal. You can't change that.

Even if he was 21, I'd wager the house he'd still be in jail right now. It's been proven time and time again, the law works differently for certain people.

It's ok if you want to be prepared for the worst outcome, but having an AK-47 in your car when you go to get a haircut is a bit much IMO.

Thankfully, it ended with him just waving his gun and driving off. Must be because he was so civil-minded like you, and chose the peaceful option.

You (wrongly) assume all confrontations can be avoided.

And what do you think the odds of everyone walking away unharmed would have been if you had pulled a gun in reaction to him pulling his gun on you? You know it more than likely would not have ended well for at least one of you. It's pretty simple really, the more guns that you introduce into a situation, the more likely someone is going to get shot.

I don't assume all confrontations can be avoided, but the chances of being shot in one go up dramatically when more parties are armed. Sure there will be the slim chance that i would absolutely need a gun to defend myself, but the odds of that ever happening are so low, that it's a chance I'm willing to take. I'm not going to let obscure what if's rule my life.

What about it?

Is it also demented, like carrying a gun and presuming a violent confrontation?

Not one of these but rather the pepper spray that comes in aerosol form.
