Hi there all,

Was wondering, am I going to have to do income tax return next year (2015) for child support payments I made in 2014 or will 2013 be my exiting return?

N400 - Naturalization                                                                                                        U.S. Passport

Aug 05, 2018 (Day 1): Applied for Naturalization online                                                  Oct 01, 2019 (Day 1): Sent US Passport Application

Aug 06, 2018 (Day 2): Check Cashed, NOA1 received online                                         Oct 08, 2019 (Day 8 ) : Passport trackable 

Aug 11, 2018 (Day 6): Recvd notification that Biometrics appointment scheduled       Oct 17, 2019 (Day 17) : Received Passport

Aug 13, 2018 (Day 8): Received biometrics appt letter online                                        Oct 21, 2019 (Day 21) : Received Naturalization Cert. back

Aug 28, 2018 (Day 23): Biometrics Appt

May 06, 2019 (Day 274): In Line For Interview

Jun 11, 2019 (Day 311): Interview Date

July 01, 2019 (Day 327) : Oath Ceremony I AM NOW A US CITIZEN!!!!

Little confused...child support is not deductible in the US. If you are referring to claiming a non custodial child as a dependent suggest you refer to irs form 8332 rules. Beyond that there are age limits that vary based upon student status, disability etc. for that you really need to read up on IRS regs.

I am doing my last tax return for Canada and was wondering if due to the fact that I am paying child support in 2014 for a child that I have in Canada if I would have to do a Canadian tax return next year (2015) for tax year 2014 or not due to paying child support. Don't think that I have to as child support is probably not taxable. Want to be sure though.

2nd question - while living in Canada did you normally report child support that you paid out? Child support is paid out of after tax money after all. The person receiving it is usually the person paying tax on it.

Got it - try the tax forums to ask then. Eventually you may find you need to report it on your US taxes as well in coming years so you should ask about that as well
