In and out of Würzburg, nice place. I was stationed in Gieblstadt, but lived in Bütthard. VERY much farming area. Loved being able to get fresh bread and milk just by walking down the street.

We had a post office we were in charge of there. I used to do the pick ups in the evening. I lived in the city, about 5 minutes from Leighton Barracks.

I like the one with the Metric system. American arrogance at it's finest.

I don't know.

I lived and built buildings and such in metric countries (Ukraine, Canada) and the US and never saw any difference or even gave it a thought. It made no more difference to me than the "scale" of the plan. Use the right measuring tools and all is well. You use the appropriate tools and build to plan. Who cares that an inch is 16 barleycorns laid end to end? Temperature? Modern ovens are digital, switch to metric and follow the recipe in the Russian cookbook. Jeezum, learning Russian was MUCH harder!. If you have an old oven order a metric oven knob on Amazon...it can be to you tomorrow. Pop them on and off as needed. Is it +3C or 36F outside? Who cares? I need to wear a coat and it isn't bad for January...in Vermont. Bottom line, I really don't care because....I don't care. And since I don't care, it doesn't matter. Just stop caring about things that don't matter. and the hostile feelings will go away.

In a global economy it would be nice if everyone used the same system. It would make things easier.

I love your paragraphs on things you don't care about.

Now you stepped over the line Gary. Anyone who doesn't see that the metric system is better than the US system shouldn't be allowed to carry a weapon.

I am not limited to one line insults as many others are and can write paragraphs, with multiple sentences, in 3 languages and cursive, it is true. Thank you.

It also possible that one can NOT care about something AND tell you why using actual life experience.

The global economy ticks along just fine unhindered by the difference between a pound and a Kg. Do you really think there is an industry somewhere struggling with this? I just got back from Ukraine and even bought meat and stuff using their currency AND metric weight to place my order. Now they are paying 6.65 UAH per liter of gas and that is all you need to know about the price of gas in Ukraine. If you think you need to know more, you are mistaken. Ukrainians drive along quite happily being totally unaware how that converts to $/gallon and couldn't possibly care less.

Even MORE amazing? I live near the border with Canada and those clever Canadians drive their cars right across the border with their liters of gasoline and km/h speedometers like it was NOTHING at all. Who'da thunk it? How does the gas know what system of measure to use for mileage?????? Then those clever Canadians buy "gallons" of gas here and it goes right in the liter gas tank!!!! How did they do that?

And while I care little about the system of measure I use because it really doesn't matter a rat's popah (<---transliterated Russian for @ss), I care more about someone saying that the USA is "arrogant" for not changing to what most other countries do. So what?

Perhaps we can have a paragraph of why it is arrogant and how, exactly, it hinders global trade.

I have never heard anyone ask for an interpreter to measure or weigh something. Maybe we should all speak only one language, that is far more a hindrance to trade than measurements.

It seems stupid that you have to build gas pumps that have displays for both gallons and liters. Why should you need two sets of wrenches to work on a car? Why should the have to label everything with both measurements? It's all a waste of money. And here I thought America leads the world in productivity.

Only two sets? As far as metric, nobody seems to agree what the standard sizes should be, or even agree on a universal metric standard. Somebody must still be manufacturing stuff in BSW, because for the life of me, I could not find a line wrench in either set that fit that brass nut correctly I was trying to tighten.

I'm sorry to be late to the party, but back to the subject of parental leave, isn't there a contradiction built in? If by hiring a woman I know that I may at some point have to pay her while she takes time off with her baby, that's a reasonable motivation to hire a man instead, or at least pay the woman less? Even if I don't have to pay her while on maternity leave, it's costly to the business to hire a woman to a key role and then lose her for a couple months, especially since even in the US laws say that I have to keep her job available and thus probably can't hire a long term replacement.
