I like the one with the Metric system. American arrogance at it's finest.

Yeah, I agree. Metric system is SO much easier. In my travels, I have gotten to know it fairly well, so I use it at home and as much as I can, at work.

That is really cool. Thanks for sharing that Dave.

Glad you liked it. I know I did.

Home would be good. Difficult for my wife language wise. But there are other places. I have opportunities in many countries around the world - comes with my job. Easiest targets would be Canada, UK, Ireland, HK and Singapore. But I'd rather go to Germany, Austria or Switzerland - in that order. That will take a bit more effort to get something suitable lined up. But it'll happen eventually. Things are really not going well in this country - and by the looks of it, they're only going to get worse. I can't get used to the backwards way of thinking that seems to take hold in this nation. May as well live in Afghanistan - different religion, same Taliban.

Well, since you removed your personal data, I don't know where "home" is for you. Germany would not be so good, IMHO. Only lived there for a bit over a year, but language would be a significant barrier, I reckon. Can't really speak as to the jobs available to Americans, as I haven't been there in years. I do have one friend who retired over there, but don't think he's working now (except woodwork to sell at fests and such).

But don't worry, if Obama does take a third term, he should be able to set things right for the US, eh? ClockWatch2.gif

Germany is home.

The issue with America is not about Obama or whoever will be the next President. This country appears to be heading straight for modern industrial feudalism and fast. We've been there and we've done that and all we have to show for it is the Great Depression. It don't work out all that well. Not sure why anyone would want to repeat that exercise but the money that runs this country seems to be interested in a repeat and it is setting things up to get one. Better that happens with me and my family elsewhere.

Women should not get paid time off for getting knocked up. They should pull their own weight like everyone else.

Well the idea behind compensating somebody for not working is not necessarily to make them better off, but to insure parents aren't put in a situation where social services has to intervene and take over the considerable expense of caring for children whose parents were forced to over extend themselves with having to pay for expensive day care.

Dude, it we were to give paid maternal leave, the CABAs would not only emasculate us, they would do it from the comfort of the couch instead of out earning money where they belong!

You mean being paid for doing something else while they post on VJ, right? They would have to get their own computers

I'm surprised as a military guy you didn't like Germany. I lived there for 3 years and loved it. But with the bases now gone, I can see it being harder to live there.

Never said I didn't like Germany, I enjoyed my short time there. My landlord knew about 3 words of Engrish, I knew about 5 of Deutsch, but we talked a lot, or at least tried to. :)

I'm just saying going back today, trying to get a job without being able to sprecht du Deutsch might cause a bit of a problem. Sounds like TBD won't have that issue, since he can speak.

Less military locations would really make it harder to adjust, at least at first. But their money system, plentiful farmland, and relatively friendly (at least the older folks) to US peoples...Should make the transition a bit easier.

I was wondering about that. Where were you? I was in Wurzburg so it was military laden with folks who spoke english.

In and out of Würzburg, nice place. I was stationed in Gieblstadt, but lived in Bütthard. VERY much farming area. Loved being able to get fresh bread and milk just by walking down the street.

If you don't mind the rain, there are several islands in the TTPI that are nice. Depends on your expectations, how far you need to stretch your retirement, and how much you need broadband to survive. Ponape is totally amazing, for one.
