Trial, shmial. Just kill him and get it over with.

Everyone knows the ####### is guilty too. He'll even admit to it. I agree with Gupt. Lop his head off like the other terrorists did to Nick Berg and broadcast it so I can jump up and down and shoot my AK-47 in the air (because we know once bullets are shot in the air, they disappear).

Here's the thing....

Is there any doubt that Saddam is guilty of terrible crimes? No.

The point of the trial is to ensure Saddam receives the justice of an impartial legal team, who can investigate and lay bare ALL of his crimes, not just skim over a couple of the big ones and ignore the rest.

Surely if his guilt is that certain what is to be lost by conducting the trial "by the book", so that there are no doubts about the methodology and the outcome? Executing the guy, when many independent observers and organisations have raised significant questions about the impartiality of the trial is hardly an encouraging endorsement for the new "lawful" government.

This comes a day after British troops raided the Basra headquarters of a Iraqi police unit to suspend its activities, following allegations of corruption.

In fact, I seem to remember elsewhere a US source claiming that the Iraqi Police programme has been a massive disaster - I'll have to look for the link.

Who has no choice? The US created the current Iraqi legal system purposefully, there is always choice.

You don't get it. As long as he's around, he will find ways to undermine the authority of the Iraqi government and president.

If you were in charge of Iraq, you'd want to see him dead as soon as possible.

No, I wouldn't.

Exceptional but possible in region of Muslim-dominated countries of Mideast PLUS Pakistan.

  1. 1954 -- Faruq (king of Egypt) overthrown by Nagib, then Nagib overthrown by Nasser (Faruq lived till 1965 and Nagib till 1984)
  2. 1969 -- Field Marshal Ayub Khan (Pakistani president) overthrown by Gen. Yahya Khan (must have been with a lot of help, considering Yahya's later demonstrated incompetence) but lives till 1974
  3. December 1971 -- Yahya Khan overthrown by Z.A. Bhutto (a civilian), but dies of cirrhosis in 1980
  4. 1999 -- Nawaz Sharif overthrown by Gen. Perviz Musharraf (still alive in exile)

All of the cases above (except for Nagib), the overthrown had become quite unpopular with the bulk of the people.

But highly unlikely if the prisoner is one so dangerous as Saddam.
