Google is your friend,

Gross is before taxes, deductions and garnishments, etc.

So if you make 5000/mo, and you have 1000 in taxes, 250 in medical 100 in dental and 500 in 401(k) deductions, your gross is 5000 and your net (the amount they deposit) is 3150.

Self employed is tricky though, it sounds like when all is said & done your husband only nets $13k so what is it that he reports to the IRS as his net business income? That is what really matters and even if it is $20k then you may still face issues as I've read of cases where there has been issues if you are only just above the 25% higher than the poverty line mark.

check the poverty lines for 2014. i did my application in Oct 2013, and 20K gross (with taxes) was not enough to meet the poverty lines; i think it was 21k. you can easily check this information on the uscis's website.

shoot -_- we read online and some said 20K was enough. we would have had his parents co-sign :\ ... we already sent the forms ...

Do they usually deny the application if its lower than what they wanted? or do they give us a chance to find a co-signer?
