Need some more information please.

My wife and I are married and she received her ssn card. We decided to keep her maiden name and use it as her middle name and take my last name. We went to apply for a state issued id and she will be receiving her card in the mail with the name being the same as the social security card (first name, middle name, last name). However, her foreign passport is still under her maiden name. Anyone have any experience with this? What I'm afraid of is that I made a mistake or did not change her maiden to her middle name correctly. I made this change by the advice of a friend of the family. He said that I would be easier to bring her family to visit if she kept her maiden name as part of her new name somehow.

Btw the lady at Social security said we should go update our records with immigration to reflect her new marriage name. What does that mean?

When you file to adjust status, use her new name, and put maiden name as other name used.

As for the passport, you don't need to do anything, if you do travel with it after you get green card, or AP, all you need to remember to do is book airline ticket for her in the name in her passport. Eventually when it comes time to renew the passport then you can have new passport issued with new name.

The way you did name change is fine. This is exactly how my fiance will do her name.

Thanks,

I feel a little bit better. We won't do any traveling until when she gets her green card. But to make sure you understand about the name I will diagram it. These names are fake of course.

Me(with my middle name)

Jack Charles Long

Her(before marriage, no middle name)

Soo Lee

Her(after marriage, with maiden name used as new middle name)

Soo Lee Long

And you are saying when she applies for AOS, she should apply as Soo Lee Long and maiden name as Lee. Is that correct?

Social security told us we couldn't change her name on her card until there was acknowledging documents from the USCIS. We changed it once we received her EAD with her married name. Good luck

Yes that is correct.

My fiance has no middle name, Just "Given, and Maiden Family". We plan name to be "Given, Maiden Family, (My Family)" after marriage.

t&s, I did like your wife, and like also YuandDan, my new name reflects our marriage certificate, I'm from Italy and in

my passport it will be always appearing the name of women with their maiden name, so I guess that when I'll be going to my country I will take with me my marriage certificate to come back to the US. All the docs I filled out for the AOS, I filled them out with my first name, my maiden name as middle name, and my last name which is my husband last name. Dont worry everythong is gonna be ok!!!

Your friend has an over-active imagination. A lot of people do.

Btw the lady at Social security said we should go update our records with immigration to reflect her new marriage name. What does that mean?

It means that when she applies for adjustment of status she should apply using her current name, Given Maiden Yoursurname, same as on the SS card and State ID card. (She was lucky that the SSA gave her a SS card in that name if it's her maiden name that's still showing in the USCIS database - many SSA offices will accept only the name that USCIS shows.)

I was unlucky at the Social Security office. My bride's name is Digna. De la Paz, Rios Gomez.

She wants to go by Digna Rios MyLastName. She was told at SS office that was not possible without court order. She can go by her maiden name, or delete herj 2 last names and take mine, or hyphen them.....Digna, De la Paz, Rios-MYLastName. SS said it had to do with here middle name.......it is on her birth cert and passport......
