I-134 sponsor responsibilities

Hello, I hope im posting in the right place

I just have a question regarding sponsors responsibility on the i-134 (and i guess eventually I-864).

I understand that the reason for sponsorship is to ensure the immigrant will not become a public charge, as in a financial burden on the state (at least thats how I understand it, please correct me if I'm wrong). This isn't a problem as I own property I rent and plan on selling it in the future to invest in the US once married and settled.

The problem arising is we are needing a co sponsor as I know I can't self sponsor especially with the I-864, my fiancées mother believes that if I do anything illegal then she is to be held responsible. I'm pretty certain this is incorrect, but if anyone could confirm this and even better show me where I could find anything concrete I could send her to put her mind at ease. This along with sending information regarding there stocks and shares etc are a concern for her. Again I'm pretty sure they don't have to list assets etc if the household income is satisfactory, but if someone could confirm it would be appreciated.

Many thanks

The legal requirements for the I-864 are listed on the form itself at the part about declaration (Part 8: Sponsor's contract). Perhaps supply her with a copy of the form and the supplementary instruction PDF? She's not going to be on the hook if you do something illegal, but she may be if you take a benefit (financially). It's a money thing, not a "are you going to make this person be an upstanding resident" thing.

Cheers Lost at sea,

Thats what how I read it as well, and after a short discussion she is beginning to read it the same way as the rest of us. Just going to send her some more information with regards to the income requirements to help understand what she's getting into. I'm sure it will all be good, just another small hurdle to overcome on the visa path, we've got over bigger ones.

Thanks for confirming what I already though, its appreciated.
