Married filing jointly...which 1040 should we send in?

I'll be getting my W-2 soon and would like to know what others have done when getting an ITIN and selected married filing jointly. Which Form 1040 did you send in? 1040, 1040A or something else? I really don't want to call the IRS.

My husband and I have not filed taxes jointly yet, but I work for a CPA firm. Most of our clients use form 1040. However, 1040A can be used if you meet a number of requirements, such as the taxable income being less than $100,000, certain kinds of income to report only, etc.

There is also form 1040EZ, which yet has another number of requirements that have to be met.

I suggest you read the instructions for all three forms.

I can't use 1040EZ and don't need 1040A. I was more worried about form 1040NR etc.

I cannot see from your timeline whether your wife is already a Permanent Resident or not. Does she have a GC? Is she in the U.S. or still living in her home country?

No, she is still in her home country. We're still waiting for USCIS to approve her I-130.

As far as I know, in that case you have the choice to have her treated as either a resident for U.S. tax purposes, or as a nonresident for U.S. tax purposes. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

We will be treating her as a resident for tax purposes and filing married filing jointly. I'm just looking for clarification on the form 1040 people who have gone this route in the past sent in.

I filed 1040. I was living abroad and did not do a NR version. I used my address abroad and efiled. Not looking into this but I would think the NR version would be for those that have USA income and are not citizens? I at one point changed my address with an IRS agent over the phone to the foreign address, this was while I was inquiring about the ITIN because I had not received one for my wife. Funny thing is that very day it showed up on a motorbike courier, took a long time for the mailing,
