This is why I asked Lost where does he live. It's strange, from what I've seen here, the folks that live in the quietest neighborhoods, are armed to the teeth. What are you waiting for? WW3? Walking dead?

They want it to stay that way

Fort Pierce Police Department unveils new armored vehicle

  • By: Elliott Jones, Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Police in Fort Pierce are now armed with a U.S. military surplus battle wagon: a six wheel, 30-ton armored vehicle worth $700,000 — that the agency got for $2,000.

“If you see my SWAT team roll up in this, it’s over, so just give up,” said Police Chief Sam Baldwin.

However Baldwin hopes the mine-resistant, ambush protection vehicle just stays parked. If used, it would be for transporting the SWAT team and for a mobile command and rescue vehicle.

Officer Keith Holmes got the vehicle in October through the auspices of the National Defense Authorization Act. That allows the military to transfer excess military vehicles to law enforcement agencies. The city got a little-used model with 5,000 miles on it.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office helped in getting the vehicle painted for free, so the sides say “Police” and "Fort Pierce."

It is the city’s second SWAT vehicle. In 2009 the city got, for free, a van equipped with a ramp on the roof for getting into second- and third-story buildings.

When the risk to the life of a cop in the line of duty approaches zero, they will cease becoming keepers of the peace and become tyrants.

And only then will they become tyrants? LOLz.

After the 3 hurricanes in a row hit (2 of which made direct landfall in St Lucie, Frances and Jean) then Wilma, there were many emergency calls that came in and accessing much of he area post storm was difficult due to washed out roads, trees down and such... Perhaps they thought for such a cheap price, it might help after another storm for this area?

RCMP Debuts New Tactical Armoured Vehicles

tav-vbt.jpg

Ottawa – July 23, 2012 – The RCMP has received delivery of a fleet of new Tactical Armoured Vehicles (TAVs) which will enhance the safety of officers involved in critical incidents.

The 18 TAVs will be used by Emergency Response Teams (ERTs) across Canada as their primary support vehicle when responding to calls. They are adaptable and designed to maximize safety for a wide range of incidents that the ERTs face, including hostage takings, armed standoffs, barricaded persons and search and rescue operations.

The arrival of these one-of-a-kind vehicles marks the culmination of years of extensive research and development, all with the goal of giving RCMP members the vehicle best suited for their wide-ranging requirements. They were designed and built by Navistar Defence Canada Inc.
