50lbs luggage Limit

Some domestic airlines make XL people purchase 2 seats. Southwest airlines comes to mind.

We have a serious obesity problem in the country -- collectively, people are heavier than ever before.

Since the airlines cannot charge a 300lb person extra for her weight, they have to impose stricter

luggage restrictions.

You are going to sit there and tell me that a plane is going to go over it's weight limit solely from passengers and their luggage?
Don't put words in my mouth... I never said that....

Well, effectively you did. I said passenger bumping has nothing to do with passenger luggage and you said I was wrong because "...many passengers are bumped and aircraft depart with empty seats because they have too much weight in the cargo hold." Since I said that noone would be bumped because of luggage and you said that that was wrong based on passengers being bumped based on weight in the cargo hold, you essentially implied that said weight in the cargo hold that gets passengers bumped is nothing but passenger luggage. ;)

I don't need to tell you what happens when you assume. Everything I said was accurate and effectively said nothing of the sorts. It is a combination of freight and baggage. Passengers get bumped when a plane goes overweight. When push comes to shove they remove the passenger and/bags as they will typically never remove freight.

Another factor that has recently come into play is that the FAA (and its international counterparts) has increased the average passenger weight factor by 20 pounds making the amount of weight allocatable to the cargo hold less. Gee, I wonder why they reduced the free on board weight of luggage by 20 pounds. I am sure it is merely a coincidence.

YMMV

I still stand by the same beleive and fact:

It's all bout getting more $$$$$$$$$$$$ out of the customer

This is the reason why the weight limits have been dropped: to allow the airlines to generate more revenue from cargo on passenger flights.

Most airlines overseas have 50 pound limits..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Well, one could also argue that despite higher fuel cost and despite other cost going up, airline tickets have remained fairly steady. Yes, they've edged up a bit but not as drastically as other prices have. Case in point, I can still fly to Europe for around $500.00 r/t which is much the same as I paid, say 5 or 6 years ago.

One way the airlines have been able to do this is by allocating additional payload to cargo for fee. On the flipside, of course, this meant reducing the load attributable to passenger luggage. From where I am standing, I think it's alright. I rather have those that carry half their household with them pay for that than me paying for it while I would not ever pack more than 100lbs to travel. The fairest way of handling this would be to drop ticket prices per passenger by $100.00 and then add a surcharge of $1.00 per pound of luggage. You'd be surprised how light folks would start to pack.

Bottom line: There's really no need to socialize the cost of transporting luggage.

People should not be able to carry more than 20 pounds on board with them as this becomes a safety issue for other passengers..

But each airline is different and check with them.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
