Greetings everyone,

I am a US citizen and recently got married to someone in a B2 Visitor visa in USA. Now, trying to fill out immigration forms and need some help with following quick questions:

1- I plan to file I-130 and I-485 together along with I-765 and I-131. Where do I file these forms - we live in NJ.

2- Forms seem pretty straight forward and not sure if it is safe to go thru a immigration lawyer. Please share your experience/thoughts!

3- Would I need to get a letter from my employer showing proof of employment - a lawyer that I spoke with did mention that but I am curious why would we need this for family based immigration as my pay stubs and tax returns clearly show I am above USCIS requirement (poverty level - I-864P)?

4- I work as a consultant in short projects and at times in between projects. In history of employment in form G-325a, do I need to mention I was 'Unemployed' for the specified duration?

August 8, 2011: NVC received file
September 1, 2011: NVC case number assigned
September 2, 2011: AOS invoice received, OPTIN email for EP sent
September 7, 2011: Paid AOS bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 9, 2011)
September 8, 2011: OPTIN email accepted, GZO number assigned
September 10, 2011: Emailed AOS package
September 12, 2011: IV bill invoiced
September 13, 2011: Paid IV bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 14, 2011)
September 14, 2011: Emailed IV package
October 3, 2011: Emailed checklist response (checklist generated due to typo on Form DS-230)
October 6, 2011: Case complete at NVC
November 10, 2011: Interview - APPROVED!!!
December 7, 2011: POE - Sea-Tac Airport

September 17, 2013: Mailed I-751 to CSC

September 23, 2013: Received NOA1 in mail (receipt date September 19th)

October 16, 2013: Biometrics Appointment

January 28, 2014: Production of new Green Card ordered

February 3, 2014: New Green Card received; done with USCIS until fall of 2023*

December 18, 2023:  Filed I-90 to renew Green Card

December 21, 2023:  Production of new Green Card ordered - will be seeing USCIS again every 10 years for renewal

This is a DZiY site so you will find the vast majority of folks do not use a lawyer... If you have a straightforward case (no waivers, overstay, criminal etc) then it is easy to do yourself... Good luck...

11-30-09: GOT GREEN CARD in mail!!!!!!

Citizenship Process;

1/11/2013: Mailed N400 to Dallas Texas

3/11/2013: interview.. Approved

4/4/2013. : Oath! Now a U.S. citizen!

In Q2, I just need to find out if folks here filing themselves or going thru a lawyer?

Also, I have learnt that there is an EZ version of I-864 - anyone has used it? Whats a difference?

The EZ I-864 is for those that are only covering one person (no kids, etc). It's less paperwork than the non EZ.

We used the EZ form as it applied to our situation.

There is a checkbox on the first page of the actual I-864 EZ form. If you can 'tick' yes to all four questions, then you may use the EZ form.

Re: question 4

If you're a consultant, doesn't that make you self-employed? If so, then you are a consultant all the time, even when you don't have a contract. So you shouldn't have to say you were unemployed. Just say that you are a consultant, and if you need to put down income, average it by month.
