Interview Question About Wedding

My fiancee and I plan to marry legally in the court here very soon after she enters the United States (in February or March), however we plan to do a ceremony and reception for my family later in May (we already have somewhere reserved too). I want to make sure that the answer she gives will be sufficient to the question they ask. For example:

"When and where are you getting married?"

"My fiance and I plan to get legally married in the local court in Minnesota within two weeks of my arrival to the United States. Then in May we will celebrate it with his family and friends by having a regular wedding ceremony and reception."

Do you think this answer is ok? She will have proof of our wedding venue reservations for May with her as well.

That's a fairly normal thing to do. You'll be fine.

27 Nov - NOA2 email received (63 days since NOA1)

30 Jan 2014 - NOA2 sent to NVC (64 agonizing days) P.S. Apparently VJ doesn't care about accurate timelines.

11 Feb - Got Case number

24 Feb - Packet 3 Received and Submitted

25 Feb - Packet 4 Received and Submitted

29 Apr - Medical (Dr Cheema)

01 May - Vancouver Consulate Interview - Approved!

06 May - Visa in hand!

06 June - Entered the USA!

14 June - Married!

Yep. Sounds pretty normal/common to me.

A lot of K1 entrants seem to do precisely what you're describing due to the marrying in 90 days requirement. You can have as many weddings/parties as you like, so long as one of them is your first legally binding one in that 90 day window. :)

Just out of interest - where is your second one? It's not abroad (outside the USA) is it?

Thanks guys!

If your family celebration is not in the US you have to wait advance parole before you can leave the US.

It will be in the same city where I live in the US (Minneapolis). I would be too expensive to go back to Peru and have a celebration there. We are hoping that her immediate family can get tourist visas and come but if not we thought about streaming it over the internet so they can watch :)

"When and where are you getting married?"

"Presuming that the visa is granted, my fiance and I plan to get legally married in the local court in Minnesota within two weeks of my arrival to the United States. Then in May we will celebrate it with his family and friends by having a regular wedding ceremony and reception."

Never assume or presume that a visa will be granted.

In addition, fully expect refusals of the tourist visas for her family.

(Moderator hat on)

Thread moved from K-1 Process forum to the Embassy/Consulate forum -- topic involves the visa interview. ***

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Don't count on anyone getting tourist visas to attend a wedding, and don't make any plans for a wedding or ceremony until the visa is in hand. Almost daily we see postings about people who had to change plans and lose money on deposits made for venues because there were delays in getting an interview, or being put in AP, or missing documents or straight out denials at the interview. I know you are nearing the end and it's exciting, but please use common sense and wait until the visa is physically in your hands before making final arrangements for anything. Good luck!

Not counting on it, as I said we have alternative plans (Internet streaming) and even if they can come we're not sure if they will.

Yes I know this is a risk but if was either that or risk not getting the venue at all (due to how often it's reserved for weddings). I had to pick a date that worked for all my family and friends because many live out of state. However it's almost 5 months after the interview and I am aware of the risks. We won't however be purchasing any Airlines tickets until the visa is in hand.

My fiance is in her interview at this moment so wish her the best of luck!
