i was wondering if any of you plan or have already brought pets along with you when you migrate/migrated. i know you have to get permits and whatnot for them but i'm lost as to where to start. i want to take mine along when my visa finally gets approved, i know it's going to take a while but heck, i figured i'd start looking into the whole "bring your pets to america" thing already.

anyone? help?

I think it all really depends on the type of pet. The biggest challange will be to find an airline that will allow you to bring the pet internationally. I believe most airlines have specific requirements on the types of containers that you are able to carry your pets in as well. There are quite a few websites online if you search "importing pets to USA." This is what I found on one website.

Dogs must be free of disease and be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days before they reach the USA. Puppies younger than three months and dogs in rabies-free areas such as the United Kingdom are exempted, however. Unvaccinated dogs will be inoculated on arrival and confined for 30 days at your expense.

Cats must show no signs of disease and rabies vaccination is required in most U.S. states.

Birds are quarantined for at least 30 days in a Department of Agriculture facility, again at your expense. You must reserve quarantine space in advance and obtain a health certificate for the bird.

If it's a rare animal you might want to check and make sure that you are actually able to bring it into the United States ahead of time as well. This is also a pretty good PDF file that I found online that tells more about importing animals into the US.

Hope that helps some...

I brought my two cats over with me. Flew with Delta, booked for them to fly in the cabin (in Sherpa bags) with me. Cost $50 each. Bookable in advance over the telephone.

Neither needed any shots for entry (from the UK) into the USA, but a fit to fly cert from the vets is recommended. Once in the USA you need to take them to a local vet to get them up to State regs.

I just brought my ,sorry OUR dog over to Germany last October since my hubby to be in the US started a new job being a Trucker and couldn't keep her.So instead of saying goodbye to her we decided I take her with me until all the visa stuff is over with and we can go home to be with my man.We flew with United and they were really good with her.Paid 254$ from Seattle to Nuremberg /Germany.

I figure their prices are pretty cheap, looking at that distance.I know that when you bruing pets TO the States they need a certificate from a vet showing they're healthy and able to fly and rabies shots.

One more thing-

vets DO NOT recommend chill pills for animals flying unless they freak so bad that they might hurt themselves in the kennel. There is a danger of them dying during the flight when given meds.Plus the meds only calm them for up to 8 hours and usually the flight is longer than that. They can go into shock once the meds wear off.So plaese be careful there.

Good Luck!

I brought my cat with me, we drove though. I had him vaccinated for rabies the day before we left, mainly because we would need proof of that to bring him BACK into Canada from the US (we were staying for a month). I'm hoping you don't find it to difficult to bring them over.

We brought my 6 cats with us when I moved from Canada to Georgia. It is easier to do when driving than flying although it did take some planning. Basically, the animal needs to be in good health when inspected at the border and rabies certificates will be required by almost every state so it is a good idea to have that done as well. Good luck in bringing your pets - they are part of your family too:-) and it will certainly help you acclimatize to your new home having your pets with you.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
