The wedding :)

Hopefully, one day all this paperwork will be over and we will be united with our loved ones.

I know that the rule is, that we have to get married within 90 days. My question now: Is it okay and "enough" to get married by a judge right away after I arrive in the US, let's say two or three weeks from when I arrive and then have the real big wedding ceremony etc two months later?

I am asking, because I am hoping to get my visa by April and then I'd love to fly to the US right away and we'd get married asap so that I can apply for adjustment of status and I could hopefully get my permition to work by end of August so that I could start to work as a teacher when the new school year begins.

That's why I wanna get married asap but without any time to plan, it is hard. Plus: I really want my family and friends to attent the wedding. And they would need some time to plan their vacation, book flights, take off and so on.

So that's why we are thinking about getting officially married right away, with just two witnesses and then plan everything and have the wedding in August.

Do you think that would cause any problems? Could they say that we weren't serious about the wedding in the courthouse maybe? I am only worried about the interviews for the adjustment of status and the Green Card.

But that way,it would solve to many problems and take away a lot of pressure :)

Thanks a lot in advance. Maybe someone has done it that way already or has heard something or has any input.

Thanks!

Yes. Many people do it that way. It does not matter where you get married, it only matters that you legally get married within 90 days of your arrival. Also, you may not even have an interview. About half of K-1 visa adjustments are approved without interview.

The way that you suggest is exactly how sensible people do it.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Yes. As long as you have the marriage license and the person performing the ceremony is legally able to do so, that's fine. It's exactly what we did. We just had a small ceremony about a month after she got here with a Justice of the Peace and some friends and family.

We're going to do a whole large "proper" ceremony a couple years out.

I have to smile... I have heard this several times... But after a few years, they think "why the heck spend all that money, were already married"... I say, have a ceremony and then take a big, nice trip before real life smacks you in the head and the bills start coming in, kids need this or that etc... You will remember the wonderful trip!

Everyone is advising correctly.

I think you are confusing the legal marriage act vs. wedding ceremony.

I am also planning a quick marriage filing in front of county court judge

to obtain the legal married status (license), afterwards, perhaps many months later,

I will actually hold the ceremony.

This way I can get subsequent green card processing started ASAP, like you.

Sure. We got married three days after he entered by a JP at the courthouse. They even furnished the witnesses. If you want a real "wedding" you can do that later after you have time to plan. Sooner you marry, sooner you can get your EAD and start working.

Screw Hawaii. Bora Bora! heheh...actually a lot of people "renew" their vows after 25/50 years and they have a big-to-do about it because its actually a great feat when you realize how high divorce rate is! So their idea of making a "whole large "proper" ceremony in a couple years" is awesome. I'd like to be able to celebrate boldly such achievements!

My wife just advised a friend of ours who is trying to get everything done in the 90 days to do the same. We did ours in Las Vegas, then about 30 days later after filing for AOS we had a reception/ announcement. Good Luck and have a wonderful time.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

We are about to start the K1 Visa, but since I'm too excited about it and planning (daydreaming) ahead, my fiancé and I decided to go to the courthouse once I'm there and we settled (within the 90days), of course I'll get a cute white dress and he will be wearing a suit, but the religious wedding with the reception will take place later, like, a year later. Knowing that the tickets are around 1.400$ people may need to know a year ahead ^^
