How long will it take to get the marriage certificate? We will only be in California two weeks before we return to Singapore.

We will goto the courthouse and get married in Rockland (near Sacramento).

I am not sure how to start the process.

Until recently I was seeking a K1 for my Burmese fiancé.

2012 09 27 First date
2013 01 01 Started cohabiting, and obtained a joint bank account
2013 07 13 Engagement
2013 10 11 Sent i129F to USCIS
2013 10 18 Received NOA1 from USCIS
2013 11 12 Received RFE notice - Almost decided to change the venue to Thailand. Sat on the RFE for about three weeks before proceeding.2013 12 20 RFE answer package received by USCIS
2013 12 23 NOA2 received from USCIS
2014 01 14 After demonstrating the hate Americans have tward the chidfree, my fiancé has no desire to visit the USA.

Going forward, I will sell off my remaining assets in the USA. I doubt I will ever return. Americans are second only to the French when it comes to rudeness.

First, you need a marriage license: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/birthdeathmar/Pages/MarriageLicenseInformation.aspx

Then, after you're married, you will want to get a marriage certificate/record: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/birthdeathmar/Pages/CertifiedCopiesofMarriageandDivorceRecords.aspx

How long it takes pretty much depends on which county clerks office you apply at.

Flying to Seattle on 6 May 2014!

Once she enters with the K-1 and you marry, she cannot leave the US and re-enter without filing for AOS and getting AP or green card first, unless you are planning on filing once again for a spousal visa for her to be able to return to the US.

Thank you? No problem. I appreciate any and all input.

I lost my respect for the USA when I was in Kuwait taking a bullet for rich people to get richer. We have no plan to live in the USA ever. I will work, retire, and die in Asia. The USA is just a tourist stop for me.

If we decide to visit at a later date we will get her a tourist visa. I will play the "veteran" card if they give us any problem. It works well.

Yes, I raise eyebrows when I tell people in Singapore that we will not be settling on the USA.

Hey, I am not going to chant, "USA NUMBER ONE!" at you or anything. I just wanted to point out about the process for entering with a K-1 and filing for AOS. If you are not planning to stay and file for AOS, then it does not pertain to you.

You need to ask the county clerk where you marry how long it will take to get your marriage certificate from the court after you are married.

~ Moving from K-1 Process to Off Topic - topic not about any visa or immigration-related process ~

I just have to wonder why you went to all the time and expense of filing for a residential visa when you were only going to pass through the US for a few weeks. When you turn around and leave without following through, your wife loses all the advantages that getting a legal visa gave her and you have to start from scratch if you ever change your mind. But it's a free world...

Karen - Melbourne, Australia/John - Florida, USA

- Proposal (20 August 2000) to marriage (19 December 2004) - 4 years, 3 months, 25 days (1,578 days)

STAGE 1 - Applying for K1 (15 September 2003) to K1 Approval (13 July 2004) - 9 months, 29 days (303 days)

STAGE 2A - Arriving in US (4 Nov 2004) to AOS Application (16 April 2005) - 5 months, 13 days (164 days)

STAGE 2B - Applying for AOS to GC Approval - 9 months, 4 days (279 days)

STAGE 3 - Lifting Conditions. Filing (19 Dec 2007) to Approval (December 11 2008)

STAGE 4 - CITIZENSHIP (filing under 5-year rule - residency start date on green card Jan 11th, 2006)

Good thing you plan on settling in a country with a VWP. :) Hope you get your certificate soon. If not maybe find out if they can mail it to you in Singapore?

Thanx

I have an employment pass in Singapore. I can come and go as I please via automated biometrics. I do not have to go though immagration in Singapore. I applied for the same in the USA and was denied.

My future wife is from Myanmar. She lives in Singapore. For her getting a tourist visa to the USA is almost impossible.

I am a "paperwork-phobic" person myself. I refuse to turn in expense reports if the amount is under $100. I even offered to split the proceeds with my collegues if they will submit my expense reports for me. But nobody will do it becuase they feel the same as I do.

I will likley never reside in the USA again. I am not interested. She is not interested. The politics, fast pace, high taxes, and hostile work environments of the USA are not comfortable to me. I am not all that compatable with American culture for about a dozen reasons. I prefer the laid back life in Asia.

Only the wealtiest of Burmese people can get a tourist visa to the USA. Approval rate is something like 25% on a good day. K1 visa has an approval rate of 95%.

Exploting the K1 for this purpose is not uncommon, and not illegal. So long as we plan to get married, and she does not remain more than 90 days if we do not request an adjustment of status, etc. I stated our intentions in the i129F application package. It has been approved by the USCIS.

Once we are married, and she can show that she did not overstay her previous USA visa, getting a toursit visa once a year or so will not be an issue.
