Sorry for bringing back this topic, but I was looking for something on the subject and came across this. I will not be changing my last name, and applied for AOS as Ms. Mylastname (I've been asking people to refer to me as Ms. since I found out what it meant, a few years ago when I was still single).

However, going through POE with my husband it was a bit of an issue. Probably a sexist male CBP officer, but he held us up a significant amount of time because my last name (which is two names, not hyphenated) wasn't the same as my husband's (one name). He even asked to see my receipt notice for the I-485.

He asked our relationship to each other, we said we are married. He gives me this look and asks "To each other?". We both stare back. "Yes". Then he said "Well, it's confusing because you haven't changed your name yet."

I said "I'm not changing my name".

Then he said "Oh..." and after giving us some more trouble let me in. I wondered how much of that was because I didn't take his last name.
