DETROIT (AP) — The new mayor of Detroit was sworn into office on Wednesday, and despite the New Year's Day holiday — and his limited powers in an insolvent city whose finances are controlled by a state-appointed emergency manager — he is starting work immediately.

Mike Duggan was holding initial staff meetings at City Hall on Wednesday after the morning ceremony, continuing the work he has done on Detroit's behalf since voters elected him in November.

With outgoing Mayor Dave Bing at his side, Duggan praised his predecessor, calling him one of his heroes.

"I'm going to continue to build on what he started, and I just want to say thank you," Duggan said during a brief ceremony punctuated by humor and informality.

Good luck, Mr. Duggan.

It's about time that racism in Detroit ended.

Lol, something tells me white people weren't gunning for that job, just saying...devil.gif

Just being a bit of a 's advocate here, but why point out that he's white, if the aim is to not to highlight the race angle?

Why not say "new mayor" and let people discover things for themselves?

devil.gif Detroit hates white people.

BTW, how have you been? You disappeared for a while.

Pretty good, the holidays were cool. Had to take a step back before I became like the ones here I argue with. I saw you asking about Janelle and I, thanks for the love.

I think that was the point of the article. Not to start a fight, just to say that after 40 years of black mayors, a white one is coming in. Trust me, if a black man or woman became the mayor of a majority white city, it would be in the headlines just as well.

When regulars disappear I wonder how they are and all. I still haven't seen Janelle around for a while, but it's good to hear that you're ok. I was getting worried that the Conciliator had gotten to you. devil.gif

But don't you think it's a bit patronising, as well as doing little more than direct people's focus to the issue of race?

I can handle him, but if I get too off the meter crazy, I take myself out of the game in order to re-focus. It's how I retain focus, most of the time. I'll pm Janelle, I don't want to be the sole black guy here againcrying.gif

For me, it's all about context. It could very well be they're trying to say that it's progression that a white person is going to a majority minority city and make a difference. There are very few that do. We hear about gerrymandering for black officials in poor urban areas all the time, maybe times are slowly changing.

If something is racist, believe me, I call it out on both sides.

I wasn't suggesting the article was racist. But we need to take race out of the picture altogether. Articles like this, however well-intentioned they may be, only serve to focus people's attention on the difference.

As much as I would like for that to happen, I don't see it going down in our lifetime. There's an underlying current of disbelief whenever someone other than white does something significant. Same thing goes if something is exclusive to black people(Eminem comes to mind).
