In an effort to make my fiancees transition to the U.S. a little easier, I decided to look into different options for music for her. I live fairly close to Chicago, but reception is pretty difficult for any Latin music stations. I then decided to look at Sirius and XM for satellite options and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with these providers for Latin music.

Or - I'm open to other suggestions as well if you have some for alternatives. I checked her local radio station and they do not provide anything via the web :(

I am listening to Alegria on XM satellite radio right now. It is an all raggaeton station. There are 5 different latin stations on XM radio. I was just shopping this weekend for a new satellite radio for my husband's birthday. Sirius radio only has one only latin station and a few world stations which play different types of music. If you are looking for all latin, XM is the one to buy. I just purchased a MyFi for Javier yesterday. It was around $150 at Walmart and it came with the home kit, the car kit and it is portable. It had everything all in one box. Most of the other one's we looked at, everything came seperate.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

While you can still listen to Salsa and Merengue here you will also be treated to a red-hot mix of the biggest Reggaeton hits with a sprinkle of Spanish Hip Hop and Bachata. We provide the music - all you need is a dance floor!

we bought the Sirius Sportster Replay from Best Buy it comes with the car Kit... Right now they are $150 but they are offering a 20 dollar mail in rebate ( we got the rebate in about a month and a half) ... and the home kit is about 50 bucks....

Sirius has pretty good reception... it does go out if you go under a bridge or something but then it comes back........ i don't think hubby has done this yet but for the best reception you need to hook it straight to the radio, I think... not sure exactly how it works...

but anyways, the reception is very clear....

the one we got is good because it is less wear and tear because you just fit it into the docking cradle.. they have a cheaper one but it has jacks that you have to plug and unplug when you want to remove it...

Do you have Dish Network? We get the Sirius channels included with our package (top 120) and they have a great Latin music selection. I keep it on instead of the radio because *no commercials* makes me happy. They also have a good Spanish channel package.

I've got digital cable......not sure what they offer either as far as stations en espanol.

I think the thing that concerned me with Sirius was that one of the stations looked like it might be all Mexican......I'll have to talk to Lu about that. The stuff she likes is in general more South American naturally and I really have no idea about how much cross over there is with Mexican music.

The best thing might be to let her decide. Both XM and Sirius offer a free trial to check out all the stations. Only bad thing is the trial is only good on the computer, but it's a good way to get a test drive.

I think you're right.....I'm just scared of getting this girl into a retail store of any kind hahahaha.

XM has great reception. We are in the mountains with lots of trees and hills around. We hardly ever lose reception. If you start to purchase something, make sure you check at Walmart first. The Myfi we bought was $150 at Walmart and the exact same thing at Best Buy was $229 with a $50 rebate so it was still more there. You can also record up to 5 hours of music on the Myfi so you can still listen to the radio if you don't have reception somewhere.
